  2. Asha Darshan • Trust started: 1999 in Assam • Activities • - Non formal education schools • - Self Help Groups • - Care Program and Shanti Sena • Funded by Asha since ’01 ~$37k total. Also funded by AID – $3.2k • ~10 Assistant Organizer to help with schools & SHGs 3

Asha Darshan – Challenges • Delayed funding from Asha – No FCRA • Lack of infrastructure – need teaching equipment, better traveling support • Heavy rains and related spread of diseases • Militancy related issues • Teacher training • Negligible local financial support for education • Clean drinking water 3

  4. Education Activities • 11 schools - 951 children • - 3 primary & 2 Middle schools • - all schools have balwadis • 2-5 teachers/school • Medium: Assamese and Bodo • Operated in former handicraft buildings 4

  5. Education Activities (2) • Duration: 2-3 Hrs • 70-80% attendance • Math, drawing, hygiene, health, music, games • Annual exams • Mid day meals started in Nov 2005 • All children in A-D school villages are going to school 4

  6. Self Help Groups • Started in ’98, 362 groups • ~15/group = ~ 6000 women • Training & credit for weaving, tailoring, poultry, petty shops, etc. • Spread health care awareness • Micro financing from savings • Bank accounts with book keeping 6

Health Care & Shanti Sena • Primary Health Care • -50 vols trained • - Provides primary care, serious cases referred to Govt. hospital • - 28 camps in 25 villages to spread malaria awareness • 2500 treated last year • Mahila Shanti Sena • - 3000 members • - Peace rallies and employment generation • - funded by DoS and N.E council • - Spread to neighboring states 8
