  2. What does MNT stand for? • ELIMINATE • Maternal & • Neonatal • Tetanus

  3. A Partnership. A Commitment. • Kiwanis International and UNICEF • working together to eliminate MNT and change the world. • Kiwanis' commitment • to reaching out to communities and leaders and together wipe out this cruel, centuries-old disease and pave the way for a better tomorrow. +

  4. What is MNT? • MNT is caused when tetanus spores, found in soil, come into contact and infect open cuts during childbirth. • It infects newborns who then suffer from excruciating convulsions and have an extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

  5. Who suffers from MNT? • Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus strikes the poorest of the poor, the geographically hard to reach, and those without health care. • In 34 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America, it still strikes babies and mothers who have little or no access to health care — either because they are poor, live in remote areas or are caught in humanitarian emergencies.

  6. Close your eyes… Recall your favorite memory of playing with your friends when you were a young child. Envision how you feel participating in your favorite activity. Think of one person that is important to you in your life. Dream Of one goal you hope to accomplish in your lifetime.

  7. Statistics • 1 baby dies every 9 minutes from tetanus. • 160 babies die each day from tetanus. • Kills nearly 60,000 newborn children every year.

  8. Several Facts • MNT has been eliminated in 20 countries since 2000. • 3 doses of tetanus vaccine = immunity from tetanus. • Woman + vaccine = protected baby. • US $1.80 protects 1 mother and her future children. • The Eliminate Project saves and protects millions of moms and her babies. • Elimination = <1 MNT per 1,000 births.
