Food and agriculture is Ohio’s top industry, contributing $93 billion to Ohio’s economy, with actual farm gate receipts of $5.92 billion. • There are 76,200 farms in Ohio. • 2nd in egg production • Top 5 in veal production • 6th in corn production, soybean production • 10th in pork production • 11th in dairy production, turkey production • 12th in production of sheep and lambs • 16th in beef production • Top 20 in meat-type chickens (broilers)

Ohio cattlemen produce more than 500 million lbs. of beef annually. • Ohio egg farms produce nearly 8 billion eggs each year. • Ohio dairy farmers provide consumers with more than 600 million gallons of milk. • Ohio’s hog farmers produce more 800 million pounds of pork, creating an on-farm value of more than $400 million. • Ohio corn farmers grow more than 500 million bushels of corn each year. • Ohio is home to more than 3,000 sheep farms that together create $24 million annual economic impact. • Ohio’s soybean industry contributes $1.9 billion to Ohio’s economy annually.

For Your InFARMation materials were developed in consultation with a curriculum consultant and practicing third-grade teacher. • Instructional resources include the following: • Student Guide with a variety of nonfiction reading passages • Teacher's Guide with complete lesson plans • Ready-to-use worksheets to reinforce key content and skills • Through these materials students will learn about farmers and the economy, livestock farming, keys to safe and healthy food, careers in agriculture and more.

  6. In conjunction with For Your InFARMation • Also sponsoring a statewide essay contest for third-graders. • OLC will award a free, all-expenses-paid field trip to an Ohio livestock farm to the winning essay-writer's entire class. More specific information about the essay contest rules and submission deadline is available at www.ForYourInFARMation.com.
