  3. Background Information This is an album artwork for one of Rush’s albums. It was released in 1977. This could have been created to be symbolic of the new age moving in and the old age moving out. The 1970’s were a time of new age and new technology was rapidly entering the scene. The band meant for this to be bad. If one looks closely in the background there is smoke rising from a smokestack. This is generally not something presented to appeal to the sense of the new age being wonderful. Also, the king is skinny and all of his clothes are torn. This shows that the new age came in and took over.

  5. Point of View Where is the Focus at? -The focus is on the ruins of the castle. What is in the foreground? -In the foreground there are the ruins of the castle, and the dead king with his crown at his feet What is in the background? -In the background there is the industrious city completely unaware of the destruction it has brought.

  6. How does the placement of words affect the meaning? -In the upper left hand corner there is not much going on. When the words are placed there they do not distract from the meaning of the picture and give attention to the plain sky.

  7. Technique What elements of composition are present in this picture? -There is a lot to do with proportion in this picture. The small size of the city makes it appear like it is of no importance, while the larger size of the castle gives the allusion that the castle was mightier than the city. -The balance of the picture also plays a major part. More weight is on the right side, drawing the viewer toward the old castle, making the viewer pity the ruined kingdom.

  8. Technique 2 What role does detail play in this album cover? -Exaggeration plays a key role in this picture. The king sitting dead on his throne is very exaggerated. There would not really be a dead king in the open like that. It is just trying to tell people how fast the new age came in, and how people just immediately deserted the old age to make way for the new.

  9. Appeals -One appeal used is the use of pathos. The deserted, ruined castle makes people pity whoever lived in the castle, especially the king, because it is so run down and it is deserted. Pathos appeals even more to the people when they see that there is a busy city in the background. Which appeals are used in this picture?

  10. Questions • Why did the author choose to have the two contrasting worlds? • Is the world really a new age? • Has the world left the old age to history? • Why could entering a new age and leaving an old age be a bad thing and/or a good thing?

My thoughts • To show the difference of the two worlds, and to convince people that the new world is more harmful than the old. • Yes, because there are so many new technologies, they are taking over. For example this project is done electronically. Nowadays technology is some people’s lives. • No, because some things have still stayed with us, we have even deemed them classics and they are very valuable. • It can be both because new technology equals greater advances into certain areas, like science, and space exploration, but it could be a bad thing because we may become so reliant on technology we would not do anything for ourselves.
