Who are we talking about? • ...The aging athlete is someone over the age of 40 who continues to participate in sporting events.
Aging & Sports Conflict • Decreased muscle mass • Decreased bone stability • Decreased tendon & ligament stability
Performance Categories • High Skill - NOT slowing down • High Skill - ARE slowing down due to physical limitations • Low Skill - Learning within the physical limitations
CAP Model • CAP is not just for kids • 0-2 / 2-6 / 6-10 / 10-14 / Teen / Young-Adult / Adult / Mature / Senior
CAP - Learning Preferences • Avoid Injury / Fear / Confidence • Outdated information / prior experience • Broad life experiences for Transfer • Willing to defer gratification
CAP - Learning Preferences • Social Interactions MAY outweigh the details of Performance • Success may be determined by the success of friends / family • Vulnerability is reduced • Looking good
CAP - Learning Preferences • Current physical condition / limitations • Current Ability - Capability • Sight / Hearing • Skeletal Stance / Range of Movement
Balanced flow of the Center of Mass from turn to turn • Ability to direct momentum from outside ski to outside ski • Legs steer under a stable upper body • Progressive > / < of edge angle Good Skiing - Fundamentals • Focusing on what is REAL for each individuals current Cognitive, Affective and Physical Condition.
Common Tendencies • Hesitated Balance & Flow • Lower edge angles • Less body angles • More even weight distribution • Slower speeds • Carved Outcome?
The WILL to improve • Because Ability & Capability don't always align with age... • We all need a strong WILL to provide the energy to improve
Sacrifice Speed & Terrain for Accuracy • Initially.... • Trust your ability, equipment, coach and knowledge • Move down hill with the ski • Skis deflect vs run • Intuition & Knowledge • Push your boundaries wisely
Stay in the game • Mix up your routines • Maintain flexibility • Strength building • Aerobic Conditioning • Visualization
Ski HARD, Train HARD and have FUN! • Have the WILL & take actionable steps to achieve realistic Goals • Leverage CAP and take the steps to achieve your goals • Have a realistic view of your Performance Category and Skill Level • Understand and Visualize desired Performance • Set goals that are both realist but still a stretch
