Private Colleges • Each college has its own admission requirements • Meeting the UC requirements will satisfy most private colleges; however many selective private colleges do require SAT Subject Tests • Questions? Contact the admissions office directly and research through Naviance • Don’t let the sticker price deter you at this stage.

  18. What else do colleges want? Essay and Recommendations Attributes ability to overcome hardship,, creativity, special talent, etc. Rigorous course work Volunteer service, extra curricular involvement and leadership

  20. How do I pay? • Federal Aid (includes grants, loans, work study) • State Aid • School-based Aid Try www.finaid.com and www.fastweb.com as well as Naviance: “Scholarships”

  21. Does the PSAT really matter? • National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in Junior Year • Good practice for SAT or ACT • Offered once per year only in October

SAT Reasoning Measures critical reading, mathematical, and writing abilities 70 minutes each for critical reading and math 60 minutes for writing 25 min. essay 35 min. multiple choice 200-800 possible points for each section www.collegeboard.com ACT 25% English 25% math 25% reading 25% science 1 - 36 possible points No penalty for incorrect answers Optional writing assessment added www.act.org ACT and SAT Reasoning (may take either for 4-year college)

  28. NCAA Eligibility • Start the certification process at end of 11th grade by going to www.ncaaclearinghouse.net • Earn a GPA of at least 2.0 in a core curriculum of 16 approved classes for Division I • Meet the core GPA/Test Score Index

  29. Summer counts; don’t waste it! • CHS Summer School • Naviance (look for enrichment programs) • Volunteer Hours • Youth Exchange / Travel Programs • Remember to request approval from counselor prior to taking off-campus classes if you plan to use the class to complete a grad requirement

  30. BEFORE your appointment… • Jot down questions • Select elective(s) • Decide on first period Finally…please arrive FIVE (5) minutes early for your appointment! • Bring registration materials (with the Course Request form completed as much as possible) to your individual appointment
