  1. Guide to 2010 ADA Accessibility Standards for ATMs Disclaimer: All information provided herein is for informational purposes and intended only as a guide. Please consult with your legal advisor and/or compliance officer on how best to comply with ADA Standards. This document does not provide any legal nor any ADA compliance advice, it is simply a guide highlighting certain information collected from manufacturers and various other sources. No warranty or guaranty of any kind is given regarding any information contained herein and the end user shall be responsible for verifying the accuracy and correctness of the information provided. NationalLink nor any of its officers, directors, agents or employees shall be liable for errors, omissions or inaccuracies of any kind contained in this document.

  2. Deadline for compliance is March 15, 2012 – all ATM’s will be judged by the new ADA laws put into effect March 12, 2010** Height & Reach Requirements: The max height for any control surface is 48 inches and the low forward reach shall be 15 inches minimum above the finish floor or ground, regardless of approach. A “control surface” is any point that needs to be reached to conduct a transaction and could be, depending on the type of ATM, a function key, card reader, receipt slot, key pad, etc. A clear, unobstructed approach is still required. **Please note: Through-the-wall ATMs that were constructed/installed prior to 3-15-12 and are in compliance with the original 1991 ADA Accessibility Standards do qualify for “safe harbor” and do not need to be adjusted to meet the 2010 ADA standards. There is no “safe harbor” for stand-alone ATMs or communications elements.

  3. Accessible RouteOne full unobstructed side of the clear floor/ground space shall join an accessible route or adjoin another clear floor or ground space. Floor Space The clear floor/ground space must be 30”x48” minimum. Positioned for either forward or parallel approach, one full unobstructed side of the clear floor space must adjoin an accessible route. *These regulations do not apply to drive-up ATMs If the cleared floor is located in an alcove or confined on all or part of three sides, additional maneuvering clearance must be provided. Forward Approach Alcoves: Must be at least 36” x 24 “ Parallel Approach Alcoves: Must be at least 60” x 15” minimum

  4. PrivacyATMs shall provide the opportunity for the same degree of privacy of input and output available to all individuals. Input Controls At least one tactilely discernible input control shall be provided for each function. Where provided, key surfaces not on active areas of display screens, shall be raised above surrounding surfaces. Where membrane keys are the only method of input, each shall be tactilely discernable from surrounding surfaces and adjacent keys. Function Keys Function keys must contrast visually from background surfaces. Visual contrast shall be either light-on-dark or dark-on-light. Function key surfaces shall have tactile symbols as follows: • Enter or Proceed key: raised circle • Clear or Correct key: raised left arrow • Cancel key: raised letter X ) • Add Value key: raised plus sign • Decrease Value key: raised minus sign Voice Guidance There is no “safe harbor” for voice guidance. The communication-related elements of ATMs are auxiliary aids and services, rather than structural elements. Thus, the safe harbor provision does not apply to these elements. Speech Capabilities ATM’s must be speech enabled in order to accommodate the visually impaired and those with mobility challenges as these individuals cannot effectively block the ATM screen with their bodies for privacy.

  5. Braille Instructions Braille Instructions for initiating speech mode shall be affixed to ATMs in order to be in compliance. There is no safe harbor for the Braille Instructions and they must be installed on all ATMs. Display Screen The display screen must be visible from a point located 40” above the center of the clear floor space in front of the machine. Drive-up ATMs are excluded from these regulations. Screen Characters • Characters displayed on the screen must be in a sans serif font • Characters should be 3/16” high minimum based on the uppercase letter “I”. • Characters must contrast with their background or dark characters on a light background. This information is provided as a GUIDE ONLY. Each ATM should be researched to find the best possible ADA upgrade path.
