  2. Stoned or just super philosophical? It’s hard to tell with the characters in this film from director Richard Linklater, which floats from conversation to rambling conversation. The film feels even more trippy because of its use of a technique in which live-action scenes are traced and animated over. “Before” trilogy fans will want to watch for a cameo from Celine and Jesse.

  3. Barry (Dec-16) Origin stories are so hot right now. This one is a dramatic retelling of President Barack Obama’s years as a young student at Columbia University. Another movie released earlier this year, “Southside With You,” was based on Obama’s first date with his then wife-to-be, Michelle Robinson.

  4. White Girl This brash debut film from director Elizabeth Wood made a splash at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Loosely based on Wood’s misadventures as a Midwestern transplant living it up in New York City, “White Girl” is unapologetic in its portrayal of her experience with sex, drugs and privilege.

  5. Beverly Hills Cop Eddie Murphy and an unforgettable synth riff star in this 1984 comedy about a Detroit cop who heads to Beverly Hills to solve the murder of his best friend. Worth revisiting if it’s been a while since you’ve seen it or his other great 1980s comedy “Coming to America.”

  6. Some Netflix Original TV Series “Fuller House” Season 2 (Dec. 9): You either know what this is or you don’t. If you don’t, then move on. “Medici: Masters of Florence” Season 1 (Dec. 9): Dustin Hoffman and Richard Madden (Robb Stark on “Game of Thrones”) star in this series about the famous family from Renaissance Italy. “Trollhunters” Season 1 (Dec. 23): This fantastical C.G.I. animated series is created by the movie maestro Guillermo del Toro.
