  1. Promoting Community Renewable Energy in the Blue Sky Region www.blueskyenergy.ca Welcome!

  2. Promoting Community Renewable Energy in the Blue Sky Region: www.blueskyenergy.ca Agenda • Review a draft energy vision and high level goals for CommunityNameprepared from responses provided during the previous community session. • Hear 2 guest speakers share their stories about developing community renewable energy projects. • Hear 1 guest expert explain the community cooperative model and the benefits for communities. • Identify CommunityName’s renewable energy assets and identify potential priority

  3. Promoting Community Renewable Energy in the Blue Sky Region: www.blueskyenergy.ca Vision and Goals • On your own, take 3 minutes to review the vision and goal statements and capture your thoughts for improving these. • Share your thoughts with others at your table and identify your table’s top 3 suggestions for improving the vision and/or goal statements. • Share your table’s top 3 suggestions with the rest of the group.

  4. Promoting Community Renewable Energy in the Blue Sky Region: www.blueskyenergy.ca Guest Speakers • Speaker #1 (in person/Skype) – Renewable project name • Speaker #2 (in person/Skype) - Renewable project name • Speaker #3 (in person/Skype) – community cooperatives and best practices for renewable energy cooperatives

  5. Renewable Energy Project Ideas - Exercise 1 Promoting Community Renewable Energy in the Blue Sky Region: www.blueskyenergy.ca • Select a scribe for your table. The scribe will write down all of the ideas on the flipchart paper. • Brainstorm all of Community Name’s renewable energy assets, such as brownfields, rooftops, waterways, experts, etc. • Brainstorm all of the potential renewable energy projects that come to mind. Don’t worry if the project is “doable” immediately or not. • As a group, select 1-3 projects that you think would be quick wins for Community Name.

  6. Renewable Energy Project Ideas - Exercise 2 Promoting Community Renewable Energy in the Blue Sky Region: www.blueskyenergy.ca • Share your 1-3 top ideas with the rest of the workshop. We’ll list them on the “master list”. • Look at the “master list”, and rank them from first (seems easiest) to last (we might have to convince people). We will tally the votes. • Pick a project or two to champion. You’ll have to do a bit of research (1 hour) before our next. • Owner of property • Size/area • Other details as per workshop leader

  7. Promoting Community Renewable Energy in the Blue Sky Region: www.blueskyenergy.ca Next Steps Workshop #3 • Work with experts to further develop project proposals

  8. Promoting Community Renewable Energy in the Blue Sky Region: www.blueskyenergy.ca Thank You

  9. Renewable Energy Definitions & Concepts Promoting Community Renewable Energy in the Blue Sky Region: www.blueskyenergy.ca Renewable Energy Energy obtained from natural resources that can be naturally replenished or renewed within a human lifespan (sustainable)Natural Resources Canada, “About Renewable Energy” Climate Change A gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, CFCs, and other pollutants. Oxford English Dictionary Peak Oil The point in time when the global production of oil will reach its maximum rate, after which production will gradually declineOxford English Dictionary

  10. Promoting Community Renewable Energy in the Blue Sky Region: www.blueskyenergy.ca The Case for Renewable Energy • Renewable Energy can help communities: • Reduce GHG and reduce the impacts of climate change • Prepare for post peak-oil • Develop resilience • Diversify revenue streams • Reduce dependence on provincial and federal funding

  11. Opportunities for Community RE Projects Promoting Community Renewable Energy in the Blue Sky Region: www.blueskyenergy.ca CEPP • Community Energy Partnerships Program • Grants to fund project “soft costs” • CEPP 2.0 to be released Sep/Oct FIT 2.0 • Ontario Power Authority Feed-In Tariffs • Premium prices for renewable energy

  12. Opportunities for Community RE Projects Promoting Community Renewable Energy in the Blue Sky Region: www.blueskyenergy.ca CEPP • Up to $200,000 grants for community energy projects • CEPP G1 - design & development • CEPP G2 - regulatory approvals • Community projects 10kW<>10MW • wind, solar, biomass, biogas, landfill gas, waterpower • located in Ontario • developed by a "Community” • subject of a future FIT 2.0 contract

  13. Opportunities for Community RE Projects Community Projects • Cooperative corporations (Cooperative Corporations Act) with a direct equity interest in the project (minimum is 15%) • Minimum number of local landowners who are co-op members and investors in the project • 35 for projects ≤500 kWh • 50 for projects >500 kWh • Co-operatives with >50% equity interest in a project also qualify for the new community set-aside which gives them priority in the queue for awarding FIT contracts
