  3. Orographic • AKA Mountain Precipitation • Westerly winds pick up moisture from the ocean • Wind carries that heavy air up the mountains • It then cools and falls back down as rain

  4. Convectional • Happens most often on the Prairies and the Shield • Warm air heats the ground pulling moisture out of the ground • Warm air rises, meets cold air up top • Falls down as rain • Often leads to thunderstorms

  5. Frontal • When hot air from the Gulf of Mexico meets cold air from the arctic • We call these “Fronts” • The warm front rises above the cold front • Causes moisture in the warm front to condense and fall down as rain

  6. Assignment • Draw the 3 different types of rainfall we encounter here in Western Canada • Page 106-107 have examples • Make sure you label them • Do NOT hand in yet. Submit at the end of the Unit
