  2. Overview of EEZ compliance functions • Monitoring compliance of: • Permitted activities • Existing structures • Transitional operations • Marine consents • Investigation and taking compliance actions where necessary • Providing guidance and promoting awareness

  3. Types of permitted activities Prospecting and exploration phases of seabed mining Marine scientific research Seismic surveying Submarine cabling

  5. Transitional activities • These were planned before the Act came into force • They can continue until 28 June 2014 provided they: • prepare an impact assessment • provide this impact assessment to the EPA

  6. Existing activities • These activities began before the Act came into force • They can continue unless “changes” occur • For any “changes” they must apply to the EPA

  7. How we monitor transitional and existing operations • We monitor these in a similar way to permitted activities with: • intelligence gathering • operator liaison • compliance action • We have also conducted inspections

  8. Inspections • Transitional inspections monitor compliance with s20 • Existing structure inspections monitor compliance with s162

  10. Looking to the future • Marine consents • More inspections(future inspections will also monitor compliance with marine consents and their consent conditions) • Dumping and discharge
