  2. Purpose –What are the 5 Characteristics of Effective Instruction? (START) –What do they “look like”? (attributes & real classroom examples) –How can I use the Characteristics of Effective Instruction as a lens/filter for the good work I am already doing with kids and will do in the future?

  3. Background In addition to the 5content areas of the Iowa Core, the Department of Education identified 5 Characteristics of Effective Instruction – in other words, “what good teaching looks like.”

  5. Considerations •Needs of students •Needs of a changing workforce •Need to remain globally competitive *Developed from extensive discussion about what features were common in all of the research-based programs,strategies, and initiatives the D.E. was supporting (Literature Reviews on AEA Moodle Website)

  13. Remembering Tool In small groups, you will create a tool to help you remember the 5 Characteristics of Effective Instruction. Options are limitless (mnemonic, actions, song, skit) within the parameters of this building and 3 minutes preparation time.

  14. 3 Classroom Examples •View using the lens of the Characteristics of Effective Instruction •Record evidence on handout •Buzz with a partner about the evidence you saw and implications for that evidence

  15. Secondary--Power Algebra Algebra 1 support for freshmen, based on standardized test scores from last year: Teacher gave basic polynomial instruction/review/model. Student Task: Create a polynomial according to the specific characteristics given. Switch with a partner to check each other's work, then provide positive and constructive feedback.
