  1. Associative Property By Monica Yuskaitis

  2. The Associative Propertyis like a man and woman getting married. First, they are each counted separately, then after they are married they are counted as one, even though they are still separate people.

  3. Before a couple are married they are considered as two separate people.

  4. After the marriage they are considered as one.

  5. These numbers are all separate. • 4 + 5 + 9 + 3 = • 6 x 3 x 8 x 4 =

  6. The numbers with parentheses around them are counted as one number. • (4 + 5) + 9 + 3 = • 6 x 3 x (8 x 4) =

  7. Therefore, the operations inside the parentheses must be done first. • (4 + 5) + 9 + 3 = • 6 x 3 x (8 x 4) =

  8. The numbers are associated together.

  9. Definition Associative Property – the addition or multiplication of a set of numbers is the same no matter how the numbers are grouped. (4 + 3) + 9 = 16 4 + (3 + 9) = 16

  10. Definition Parentheses – the enclosing symbols ( ) which indicate that the terms within are considered as one unit. (4 + 3) + 9 = 16

  11. Definition Parentheses – ( ) are also called grouping symbols (4 + 3) + 9 = 16

  12. Order of Operations The operations within parentheses must be done first before the other operations. (4 + 3) + 9 = 16 7 + 9 = 16

  13. Solve these problems • (76 – 13) + 20 = • 60 – (45 - 23) = • (329 + 200) – 125 = • 75 – (25 -13) = • 88 + (55 – 13) = 83 38 404 63 130

  14. Check Did you remember to do the operations in the parentheses () first?

  15. Solve these problemsLet n = 5 • (16 – n) + 4 = • n – (3 + 1) = • (n + n) – 8 = • 24 – (n +7) = • 14 + (n + 13) = 15 1 2 12 32

  16. Check Did you remember to do the operations in the parentheses () first?

  17. Insert parentheses to make each equation true • 11 – 5 + 1 = 5 • 15 - 10 – 8 = 13 • 8 – 2 + 7 = 13 • 9 + 3 – 2 = 10 • 11 – (5 + 1) = 5 • 15 – (10 – 8) = 13 • (8 – 2) +7 = 13 • (9 + 3) – 2 = 10
