  3. FALL LINE • The FALL LINE is a natural border that is a line of small waterfalls and rapids.

  4. Fall Line Cities • Alexandria Potomac River • Fredericksburg Rappahannock River • Richmond James River • Petersburg • Emporia

  5. Artificial Lake • Buggs Island Lake is the largest artificial lake. That means it was man made; not natural.

  6. Reasons for growth? • Products could be shipped easily. • Goods from other places could be brought to the cities. • Mills were built near the fast moving rivers and streams.

  7. Richmond • Richmond began as a small trading town. • It is now an URBAN area. • It is our state capital • Lawmakers meet in Richmond • Governor Bob McDonnell lives there.

  8. Charlottesville • University of Virginia is here. • So is Monticello. • It’s the home of Thomas Jefferson.

  9. Northern Virginia (NOVA) • Arlington, Falls Church, Manassas, Reston • High Population • URBAN • Near Washington, D.C. • Busy roads • Lots of TECHNOLOGY • A lot of government workers.

  10. Danville, VA • Danville is famous for its textile factories. • A textile factory is one which weaves or knits fabric in order to make cloth.

  11. Farming in the Piedmont • The soil is fertile. • The soil contains a lot of clay. • Corn, Wheat, Peaches and Tobacco are grown here. • There are dairy farms (cow) and horse farms. • (Fauquier & Loudon have many horse farms)

  12. Industries in the Piedmont • Lumbering • Deciduous Trees Shed leaves • Tobacco Factories • Textiles • Furniture, clothing, paper and chemical manufacturing.
