Approaches in Developing IS • Bottom-up Approach • focus on basic TPS requirements & implements systems to meet these needs • Top-down Approach • attempts to align IS with business strategies & involve top mgnt in ISP process • Adhoc Approach • directed toward solving a particular problem without considering other problems or the potential of integrating applications • Data Modeling Approach • attempts to develop a common DB model to support operations of firm & remove any data redundancies

Pre-Planning Activities • Traditional vs Strategic Plan • Emphasis - analysis of external factors rather than performance review and/or internal factors • Scope - includes other areas such as linkages with suppliers & distribution channels • Approach - traditional plans extends the past & the present into the future. Strategic plan starts with the goals & then describes the best way to get there from the present • Analyze Business Planning Method • Corporate vs Business Unit • SBU - a unit that sells distinct set of products/services & serves a specific set of customers & compete with well-defined set of competitors
