  2. English Bellwork- Monday, October 2 • 1. An appositive is a phrase that follows a noun or pronoun, and that identifies or adds details to the sentence. • 2. Why are appositive phrases good to use? • 3. Write an example sentence with an appositive phrase. You could say: Washington was a great statesman. Our first president was a great statesman. Or, you could use an appositive phrase: • Washington, our first president, was a great statesman. • Our first president, Washington, was a great statesman.

  3. English Bellwork- Tuesday, October 3 • Directions: Combine each set of short sentences into a better one by using an appositive. Then underline the appositive in your new sentence. • 1. The dolphin is a gentle mammal. The dolphin can be taught to jump through a hoop. • 2. The space shuttle is named Columbia. It has made five trips into space.

  6. English Bellwork- Friday, October 6th • Directions: Create a sentence using a comma to SHOW each of these three semicolon rules. • 1. Use a semicolon between the clauses of a compound sentence that are not joined by a coordinating conjunction. • 2. Use a semicolon to join clauses that are joined with conjunctive adverbs or transitional words. • 3. Use semicolons to avoid confusion with commas.
