  4. Who are Sikhs???? • Word “SIKH” means disciple, to “learn”. Pupil in the school of God • Follow teachings of the ten masters and eternal Guru (Guru Granth Sahib Ji) • Began 1469 with Guru Nanak Dev Ji • Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji 1708 to date

  5. …the beginning • So what was it like around 1469? • Mugals in rule (Babar) • High Hindu population. • High in tyranny , segregation, social conflicts. Life wasn’t easy. • Mugal expoliting the population by forced religious conversions. • Meanwhile Hindu population was strongly influenced by people labelled as Superior from birth or High Cast (Brahmans). • Class based society based on superstitions and ritualism • Sati • The low caste shadow…. • We cant prayer together…sorry

  6. Teachings… • ONLY 1 GOD!!! • Everyone is equal • Reap what we sow • “truth is high but higher still is truthful living” • Believe that all the teachings from Guru Nanak Dev Ji to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji are true

How does a Sikh show belief?… • Devotion…- How do we show we are devoted to something?? • Football?? • A hobby?? • So just like these - people who believe in something will show a way of devotion for their faith also… • Sikhs will keep the “Khalsa Image”, Uniform, try to live in Gods Will, stay true to the Guru’s teachings and live according to the Eternal Guru Granth Sahib Ji.. Stay in the company of the holy…

How a Sikh should live… • Be strong and speak up against injustice • Be humble • Live in GODS Will • Stay away from Tobacco and Alcohol • Be honest and stay faithful • Help all, not just Sikhs!! (BhaiKhanaya Ji) • Live as a Warrior Saint – Aim to accept AMRIT (“A” – without “MRIT” –end/death). • Strength to live in GODS WILL comes from… • AMimRqvylwscunwauvifAweIvIcwru ] • In the Amrit Vaylaa, the ambrosial hours before dawn, chant the True Name, and contemplate His Glorious Greatness

Keep and live by the image of Khalsa… • Kes, Kanga, Kachhera, Kara, Kirpan… • Outward symbols of how a Sikh should feel on the inside… • Kes-Will of God • Kanga-To keep oneself clean (mind) • Kirpan- To show mercy and stand up to injustice • Kara-to perform good deeds with hands • Kachhera To practice control of vices and desires, commitment
