Traditionally, part of the tooth surface is removed to allow for the mold to be taken. The crown is then fabricated from this mold. Your teeth are fitted with provisional covers while the fabrication process commences, and then a second visit is required to remove the teeth covers before the customized crowns are cemented in place.
