A Brief Historical Background • A book entitled “The Great American University, its rise to prominence, its indispensable national role why it must be protected” by Johnston Cole, 2009, • Created path to greatness • Shaped American society (values, system of governance, industries, etc.) • National treasures • “These towers of excellence are not just “ivory tower”. Instead they are transforming our lives: they are exceptionally talented scholars inside those towers making discoveries that are important to our lives.”

It is not really private or really public;…..It is unique ….the university is so many things to so many different people that it must, of necessity, be partially at war with itself. “ • Competition and Choices are the core of American higher education.

A Brief Historical Background • Shanghai Jiao Tong Universities evaluated top 500 university based on their research performance and found that: • Out of top 20, 17 are American • Out of top 50, 40 are American • Since 1930, 60% of the Nobel Prize winners have been Americans • Top 500 universities, none of them are from ME, CA, and NA.

  14. A Brief Historical Background • In 1636, Harvard college opened its door to only NINE students. • Harvard was never officially linked to any religion. The Puritans designed the college “To advance learning and perpetuate posterity; dreading to leave an illiterate ministry to churches.” p.14 • First American University to emphasize research was John Hopkins (1876). • John Hopkins, an entrepreneur and wealthy industrialist allocated $ 7 million to build a hospitals and a new type of university, research focus.
