Part 1 – Personal Details • What’s your name as given on your college ID? • Could you spell your surname, please? • Are you an Undergraduate, Masters, or PhD student at Imperial? • Which department are you in, and what subject are you studying? • How long have you been in the UK? • Which language do you usually speak with your family? • Do you speak any other languages, apart from English? Please continue to next slide

  2. Question 8 For this question, we’d like you to speak for about 30 seconds. 8 What are the biggest problems you have with your spoken English? (Try to give some examples of the difficulties you have when speaking English.For example, does it take you a long time to think of a sentence before you can say it? Do you feel that you hesitate too much? Or that you don’t know the basic words that you need to say what you mean? Perhaps people often misunderstand you, you feel you have a problem with your pronunciation. Give us as much detail about your English problems as you can.) Please continue to next slide

  3. Question 9For this question, we’d like you to speak for about 40 seconds. 9 Describe your English learning so far. For example, how many years did you spend studying English at school in your own country? How much time have you spent in England or in any English speaking environment? What method of learning English has helped you the most, or the least? Please continue to next slide

  4. Question 10For this question, we’d like you to speak for about 60 seconds. 10 Describe the place where you live. Tell me about the accommodation you’re in at the moment. What part of London is it in? Is it in a College Hall or a private house? Is it big enough? Is there anything you particularly like or dislike about your room? Please continue to next slide

  5. Part 2 - Reading Sentences We’d like you to record yourself reading out 10 sentences. Sentences 1-5 are informal. Sentences 6-10 are from an academic context. Look at the sentence for 5 seconds, then read it out

  6. Informal Sentences • It’s not as easy as I thought it would be. • I’ll do it in a minute, when I’m ready. • Everywhere is closed at that time in the evening. • We usually buy fish and chips from the shop on the High Street. • I’m not aware of any problem – it must have been fixed.

  7. Academic Sentences • We have not been able to determine the source of the problem. • That analysis is based on invalid assumptions. • His research hypothesis has been rejected in several high profile journals. • A new system for processing the information is being developed at Imperial College London. • This radical approach utilizes the latest file sharing technology and avoids the usual network jams.

  8. Part 3 - Describe a Diagram Preparation Time – 45 secondsSpeaking time – max 90 seconds Explain how a stapler works The next slide shows a diagram of a stapler. The parts of the stapler are labelled and some useful verbs are given. You can use the words provided if you wish but you do not have to use them.

  9. That’s the end of the test Now save your file(s) as .mp3 or similar, approx 6MB in total Name your file with your surname first, then your given name, then TEST: eg Obama_Barack_TEST(1,2,3)
