  3. Mother Tongue A first language (also native language , mother tongue , arterial language , or L1 ) is the language (s) a person has learned from birth or within the critical period. Sometimes, there can be more than one mother tongue, when the child's parents speak different languages.

  4. Second Language • A second language or L2 is any language learned after the first language or mother tongue

  5. Foreign Language • A foreign language is a languageindigenousto another country. It is also a language not spoken in the native country of the person referred to, i.e. an English speaker living in Japan can say that Japanese is a foreign language to him or her. These two characterisations do not exhaust the possible definitions, however, and the label is occasionally applied in ways that are variously misleading or factually inaccurate.
