  5. Domestic organizations A domestic organization provides travel and tourism products and services for tourists holidaying in their own country. These include: tour operators transport providers accommodation visitor attractions. What, do you think, are the main roles of these different types of domestic organization?

  6. What is a tour operator? Tour operators are also known as the ‘organizers’ of the travel and tourism industry. Can you suggest why this may be? Tour operators put together the various components of the package holiday. They produce brochures to advertise the holidays they offer. Tour operators may sell their holidays a number of ways: through travel agents, direct via call centres, or through their own website, for example. To which sector do you think tour operators belong?

  7. Domestic tour operators Domestic tour operators arrange UK holidays for UK residents. Often these holidays include transport and accommodation arrangements and sometimes other products and services, such as insurance. Examples of domestic tour operators include: • Pontins • Haven • Center Parcs • Shearings. Working in small groups, select one of the above tour operators to investigate in more detail.

  11. Domestic accommodation Accommodation forms an essential part of any holiday, providing tourists with a clean, safe and comfortable place to stay during their time away from home. Accommodation can range from 1 star budget hostels to 5 star luxury hotels, and from bed and breakfast to camping under the stars! The UK has an enormous range of accommodation to suit the needs of many different types of tourist. In pairs, make a list of as many different types of domestic accommodation you can think of.

  12. Assignment: Accommodation types Accommodation types Accommodation falls into two categories: • serviced • non-serviced (self-catering). Think about a recent holiday you have taken in the UK.   14. Accommodation: which sector? Most accommodation providers operate in the private sector, but not all. Can you think of any possible exceptions? Some examples include: • Youth Hostelswhich belong to the voluntary sector • YMCAswhich belong to the voluntary sector • educational establishments(e.g. university campuses)which are part of the public sector.
