  2. Early Life • Born: April 25, 1918 in Newport News, Virginia • She grew up just outside of New York City • She received her musical education in public schools. • Ella’s mother died when she was only 15 • Her first big break was at the Apollo Theater in Harlem when she was 16 years old.

Life Story • Ella was married twice to Bernie Kornegay and Ray Brown. • She lived in Beverly Hills, California. • Fitzgerald had one son with Ray Brown. • She was a jazz or pop singer. • From 1956 to 1964 she recorded a 19-volume series of “songbooks.” • Around the 1970’s she became ill with many health problems, but she would not give up performing.

  4. Major Accomplishments • She was honored with fourteen Grammys, the Kennedy Center Award, and an honorary doctorate in music from Yale University. • In 1992 President Bush honored her with the National Medal of Freedom.

  5. Legacy • Ella Fitzgerald died on June 15, 1996, at the age of seventy-eight. • Ella Fitzgerald one of the most exciting jazz singers of her time and because of the naturalness of her style, had a popular appeal that extended far beyond the borders of jazz. • She left her impressive financial estate in a trust, including 2.5 million in proceeds from the sale of her Beverly Hills home.
