Session learning Content Skills Creative thinking Prediction Forming questions Speaking and Listening (Group discussion) Analysis • To develop our understanding of film using the animated short ‘Killing Time at Home’ • To start learning about one of the languages of film called ‘mise-en-scene’

  2. Mise-en-scene A term taken from French theatre which refers to everything which is ‘put in the scene’ of a film, for example: • Setting/location • Props • Costume • Colour • Lighting • Facial expressions/body gestures

  3. Facial expression/body gestures

  4. His wide eyes make him look as if he has been awake for ages. • The way he sits makes him look weak and vulnerable. • His expression is a bit blank – he doesn’t look excited about what he is doing. He looks a bit bored.

  5. Denotation (describe) When we look at the denotations of an image, we are looking to describe exactly what we see. Describe what you see in the next image:

  6. Some examples: • Blue • Windscreen • Sky • Clouds • Mountains • Wheels

  7. Connotation (associated meanings) • Blue (boys, masculine, cool) • Mountains (adventure, freedom, danger)

  8. Mise-en-scene in ‘KTAH’ Your task: Use one colour for denotations and another for connotations as you do the same activity with a still from the film. Start with all the denotations you can see.

  9. Reflection • What have you enjoyed about today’s lesson? • What have you learnt in terms of knowledge or in terms of the way you have been learning?
