  2. Sudden Unexplained Infant Deaths (S.U.I.D) Most unexplained infant deaths are NOT SIDS and are largely preventable. Many involve asphyxiation combined with unsafe infant sleep conditions. The most vulnerable are infants 1 to 6 months old.

  3. YOU CAN REDUCE THE RISK! Sleep Position Cigarette Smoke Sleep environment

  4. Sleep Position Placing baby on his/her back for sleep is the single mostimportant step in reducing the risk of his/her dying from re-breathing CO2 or from asphyxiation.

  5. Since 1996 the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended the back sleep position because it lowers the risk of sudden unexplained infant death.

  6. Maintain a smoke-free zone around the baby !

  7. Cigarette Smoke Exposure The MORE cigarettes, the HIGHER the risk! Don’t smoke or expose yourself to second-hand (other people’s smoking) while you’re pregnant and Don’t expose your baby to second-hand smoke!

  8. How Exposure to Cigarette Smoke Harms Babies Cigarette smoke destroys brain cells that allow the baby to wake up when he or she is not getting enough oxygen.

  9. Safe Sleep for Your Baby Use a Safe crib or Pack ‘n’ Play Provide a FIRM mattress with a FITTED sheet. DON’T use pillows, stuffed toys, bumpers, wedges, or fluffy comforters – baby doesn’t need them.

  10. These are Unsafe Sleep Environments for Babies Waterbeds Pillows Couches Mattress pads Adult beds Blankets Recliners Wedges Air mattresses Bumpers Futons Stuffed toys

  11. Babies Are Safest Sleeping Alone Sharing a bed with BABY is dangerous! Adult beds and bedding are not designed for infants. There is a risk of accidentally suffocating the baby by rolling over him or her while asleep. This is also why babies should notsleep with other children or pets.

  12. Safe Way to Sleep Near Baby Share your room instead, by placing baby’s crib next to your bed.

  13. Sleep Environment Avoid overheating - keep room temperature no higher than 70º Do not overdress baby Keep baby’s face and head uncovered 100% Cotton SleepSack™ Wearable Blanket <www.halosleep.com>
