To make your landscaping project manageable, it really helps if you divide up your yard into functional zones. Consider a backyard that serves several purposes and a space your whole family can enjoy. A space toGrowthings 01 Choose the right plants. Study your landscape and see where the sun rises and sets. Some plants love the morning sun but will not tolerate western sun. Consider putting in a kitchen garden where you can grow a few herbs or vegetables. Just be sure the area you choose receives several hours of sun. 02 An area toRet Create an extension of your house to enjoy cool breezes and fresh air. Design a patio using planting beds, container gardens, and weatherproof furniture, rugs and hammocks to decorate the outdoor space. You'll enjoy your patio more if you can provide relief from the sun. Choices for providing shade include mature trees, umbrellas, retractable awnings, or even pergolas and arbors planted with vines. 03 A space toEat If you love eating outdoors, decks and patios make great sitting or dining areas when the weather’s appropriate and they create a nice overflow areas for guests during parties. If you need an outdoor kitchen, you don't need a fancy grill, but a countertop for food prep and conveniences such as closed storage and a separate side burner will greatly enhance your outdoor cooking experience. 04 A place toPlay Position your children’s play area where you can see it from your deck or patio to keep a watchful eye on the young ones. You can build a playhouse, tree house, or your own customized hideaway for your kids. 05 A place for a Fire Pit Most outdoor spaces aren't complete without a fire. Add a fire pit to extend the seasonality of your outdoor space. Fire pits, whether built-in or moveable, also serve to draw people together and can extend the usefulness of an outdoor living room into cooler weather. 06 A fence forPrivacy Your outdoor space will feel more like an oasis if it has a sense of enclosure. Fences and garden walls ensure privacy and security for patios, but you can also use lattice, pergolas, and landscaping to define outdoor spaces and conceal views of neighboring houses.
