  2. Homeless Definition as Provided in NCLB Children and youth who lack a fixed, regular, adequate nighttime residence. • Fixed= stationary, not subject to change or fluctuation • Regular= Normal standard, nightly basis • Adequate= sufficient for meeting physical/psychological needs

  3. In the 2011-2012 school year 367 FCPS students were identified as homeless residing in: • Shelters: 36 • Shared Housing: 297 • Car/Parks: 3 • Hotel/Motels: 18 • Awaiting Foster Care Placement: 13

  6. Causes of Homelessness - • Lack of affordable housing • Under Employment • Deep poverty • Health problems • Domestic violence • Natural and other disasters • Abuse/Neglect • Family conflict (unaccompanied youth)

  7. Barriers to Education - • Enrollment requirements (school records, immunizations, proof of residence and guardianship) • High mobility resulting in lack of school stability and educational continuity • Lack of access to programs • Lack of transportation • Lack of school supplies, clothing, etc. • Poor health, fatigue, hunger • Prejudice and misunderstanding

  8. FCPS McKinney-Vento Program (Homeless Ed.) Title I set-asides and Title X funding assists with: • Identification • Enrollment/School Stability • Coordination of Free School Meals and Transportation to School • Access to Educational Services and Referrals to Outside Services • Parent Involvement • Student Involvement in School and School Activities (Educational Needs) • Emergency Basic Needs, as Related to School Attendance • Tutoring at Area Homeless Shelters • Coordination of Supportive Efforts as Provided by the Community

A Few Contributions … • Rotary – Roofing supplies for homeless family • Wells Fargo Bank - $1,600 for Books and Uniform Shirts • Bunnell Elementary – Community Problem Solvers $1,500 for Emergency Housing and Food • Indian Trails – Community Problem Solvers - $200, food, clothing & hygiene products
