General information • New York is one of the largest cities in the world and the largest city in the USA • It is the financial centre of the world and one of the largest seaport • N.Y. is situated in New York state, on the mouth of the Hudson River • The population is about 20 milion in conurbation N.Y.S.E New York Stock Exchange

  3. A bit from the history • The oldest part of the city is the island of Manhattan • The area was first populated by Indians • The first Europeans who settled there were the Dutch who bought Manhattan in 1626 • They called the place New Amsterdam • In 1664 the English took over the place and renamed it to New York

  4. Manhattan Manhattan Island is the real centre of the whole city There you can find the most important and famous places and buildings

  5. Big Apple • New York has a lot of other names –nicknames • The most famous are Big Apple and Melting Pot Melting Pot

  6. Dividing of the city • New York is divided into five boroughs • Manhattan • Brooklyn • Bronx • Queens • Staten Island

The symbols of the city • Statue of Liberty- the most famous symbol not only of N.Y. but of the whole United States and the whole world, the symbol of freedom and democracy • Skyscrapers- next symbols of modern American cities- the most famous are Empire State Building and Chrysler Building -but it used to be WTC which was the most remarkable one

The Statue is situated on the Isle of Liberty Was designed by F.A.Bartholdi and constructed by Gustave Eiffel It was given to American people as a present from the people of France to the hundreth anniversary of getting independence from Great Britain It is made of 32.5 tones of copper it is 93 metres high The Statue of Liberty

The statue is situated on a huge pedestal from that there are 171 steps to a viewing gallery in the crown • The seven spikes of the statue´s crown represent the seven oceans and seas of the world • On her right hand it holds a torch • and in her left hand it holds a book with inscription : July IV MDCCLXXVI • It means 4th July 1776- the date when The Declaration of Independence was accepted by the Second Continental Congress

World Trade Centre and September 11th • WTC called Twins – probably the most famous N.Y. skyscraper • Was built in 1973 and used to be the highest building in N.Y. • Was destroyed during a terrorist attack on 11th September 2001 • It was 417 m high and had 110 stories • The place is called Ground Zero now

  17. EmpireState Building • Now is the highest building in New York • Was built in 1931 • Is 318 m high and has 102 stories The view from Empire

  18. Chrysler Building • Chrysler Building was built in 1930 • Is 306 m high • It represents Art Deco Style

Two famous streets • New York is famous for its organization of streets and avenues • The road that comes from the south to the north are called AVENUES • The roads that come from the west to the east are called SREETS • In Manhattan two roads are different: • Broadway- is situated in the place of original Indian path • Wall Street -situated on the place of former wall built by the first Europeans to protect them against the Indians

  21. Wall Street • The financial center of the USA and one of the most importatnt financial centres of the world • The place where New York Stock Exchange (N.Y.S.E) is situated

Times Square • The intersection of Broadway and the Seventh Avenue • Is the theatrical centre of the city, surrounded by playhouses, cinemas, night clubs, hotels and shops • After dark it pulse with a neon glow which has given it the nickname „The Great White Way“ • Favourite place for celebrating –for example New Year´s Eve The Ball Drop

Rockefeller Centre • World´s largest business and entertainment complex owned by privates • A huge complex of buildings situated from 47th to 52th Streets • All buildings are joined by a network of underground concourses • Built between 1931-1939 • Financed by the businessman and philantropist D.Rockefeller Jr.

  24. Plaza • The focal point of the Rockefeller Centre is the Plaza • It is below the level of the street • Is used for outdoor dining in sumer and ice skating in winter • The place is connected with fine shops by undeground concourses

  25. Carnegie Hall • A music centre founded in 1891 by Andrew Carnegie • The world´s greatest orchestras and soloists play here

  26. Radio City Music Hall Entertainment Centre • In the Rockefeller Centre • It is a masterpiece of art deco • It presents concerts, special performances and spectacular revues

  27. Guggenheim Museum • In Uptown Manhattan • Famous museum especially for modern art

  28. Metropolitan Museum • Great museum, concetrated especially to world´s art • A lot of artefacts lent or given by other famous world´d museums • the Egyptian Collection is very famous

  29. United Nations Buildings New York is also the seat of United Nations Headquarters

  30. Central Park • A huge park which extends from 59th to 110th Streets • On weekdays it is occupied by children and mothers, people stretching their muscles and minds before and after work and, of course, tourists • At weekends it is a playground for all New York • But there is a high rate of violence too, and especially at night it is a very dangerous place
