  2. A race to be the first men to the South Pole • An 1800 mile round trip, on foot, pulling sledges ‘man-hauling’ • -30 degrees for 4 months • Died with 4 team members on return from the South Pole – • starved and frozen by a freak storm • 11 miles from a supplies depot

  3. His diaries were found by their bodies ‘We shall stick it out to the end, but we are getting weaker of course, and the end cannot be far’ ‘It seems a pity but I do not think I can write more’ Last Entry ‘For God’s sake look after our people’

At the point of that last photo they still had 900 miles to travel back to safety • The story has become one of the most famous polar exploration stories • When the news of his death was received in the UK there was a response similar to that when Princess Diana died • A huge public donation to support the families of the five dead men • Streets, school houses, even orphans with no surname were named after Scott

Schools had supported the expedition • Sledges • Sleeping bags • Dogs • Ponies • So the tragedy was keenly felt all over the nation • Hailed as a hero and the ultimate in teamwork, bravery and sacrifice • Led to the foundation of the Scott Polar Research Institute – a leading polar science authority to this day • Led to the founding in 1932 of the British School Exploring Society • www.BSES.org • Wilderness exploration and environmental science expeditions

  11. THE SLEDGE PULL CAMPAIGN • To create expedition scholarships fund for each school, and in each county all over the UK. • Use the Scott story to get the public support for young people’s adventure.

  12. Nationwide relay • An on-campus team challenge between schools • For challenge, learning and to raise funds

  13. Fundraising – why? • Create adventure funds for your school • To create an expedition scholarships fund for your students • To support the educational work of the Scott Polar Research Centre • (option to use some of the funds to support your school’s nominated charities)

Enter a team Sponsor logos • 1 or more teams of 5 people • 5 miles together as a team • Each person pulls a small wheeled sledge at 5mph (slow easy jog) • Fundraising as a team project • What you can, from £1 to £200 for each person • 50% supports adventure activities in school • 37.5% creates an expedition scholarships fund for your school • 12.5% Scott Polar Research Institute School logos
