What is an advocacy campaign? Advocacy campaign A set of advocacy, communications, and mobilization activities – based on our experience and values – that influence norms, policies and practices to achieve lasting change. National advocacy campaign A national, network-wide, coordinated set of strategies and activities to accelerate that change.

Why Habitat? Why now? We can reach and have influence over policymakers. We can leverage the strength and reputation of our brand. The network is ready to take their advocacy to the next level. The current messages aren’t working and reaching a broader audience – lack of understanding about affordable housing.

Building on a strong foundation In FY18, 438 affiliates, representing 46states and the DC reported taking policy positions. For those policy positions with successful outcomes at the local level, 4 out of 5 involved mobilizing their supporters and working in
Subthemes The Cost of Home campaign aims to improve housing affordability by influencing policies and systems that will improve and promote:
Expand existing resources for the affordable housing continuum. Create new, dedicated resources for the production of affordable rental and for-sale homes, including housing bonds, housing trust funds, tax incentives, etc.
Expanding down payment assistance. Expanding financial education and housing counseling. Expanding options for alternative credit scoring Combating predatory lending and creation of safe alternatives.
Inclusionary housing policies. Streamlining land use approvals. Improving zoning ordinances. Combatting “exclusionary zoning”
Expanding home repair/modification assistance. Transportation access Property tax relief for lower-income homeowners.
