  20. Gramática • In Spanish, all nouns have GENDER. They are either masculine or feminine. You can tell the gender based on the definite article (“the”) – elor la. • For example: el papeland el padre are both masculine nouns; la carpetaand la madreare both femininenouns. • Nouns NEVER change in gender.

  21. Gramática • Adjectives are different. Adjectives change form (spelling) to match the noun. • Usually, the ending will be “O” for masculine forms, and “A” for feminine forms.

  22. Gramática • Let’s use the adjective “ARTISTIC” as an example. • ARTISTIC has a masculine form: ARTÍSTICO, and a feminine form: ARTÍSTICA • Since the noun EL CHICO (the boy) is masculine, we need to use the masculine form of the adjective. • Elchicoartístico. The artistic boy. • Elchicoesartístico. The boy is artistic. • Since the noun LA CHICA (the girl) is feminine, we need to use the feminine form of the adjective. • Lachicaartística. The artistic girl. • Lachicaesartística. The girl is artistic.

  23. Gramática • Of course, just like English, there are exceptions in Spanish! Adjectives that end in “E”, for example, work with both feminine and masculine nouns, and don’t need to be changed. • Mihermanoespaciente. • Mihermanaespaciente. • Another exception! DEPORTISTA doesn’t change either, even though it ends in “A.”

  24. Gramática • If you are female, you’d use the feminine form of an adjective to describe yourself. • If you are male, you’d use the masculine form of an adjective to describe yourself. • TRY IT: Yo soy (I am) …

  25. Gramática • In Spanish, the adjective comes AFTER the noun it is describing. • La chicainteligente. • The intelligent girl.

  26. Forming phrases… • ¿Cómoerestú? • What are you like? • Yo soy… • I am … • Yo no soy … • I am not…
