  10. Compound Sentence •  A compound sentence contains more than one independent clause (IC). • INDEPENDENT CLAUSE • Two important patterns for constructing compound sentences:  IC ,conjunction IC. Or IC; IC.  

  11. Independent Clause (IC) • An independent clause is a meaningful group of words that contains both a subject and a verb.  • An independent clause can stand alone as a simple sentence. • EX. I eat bananas. • Eat bananas.

  12. IC, conjunction IC. IC1: I love to eat.IC2: It makes me fat. These two sentences could stand on their own, but to make your writing flow you could combine them using a conjunction.I love to eat, and it makes me fat.

  13. IC; IC. IC1: We went swimming.IC2: We had so much fun.Sometimes you don’t want to use a conjunction. There is always the option of a semi-colon. We went swimming; we had so much fun.

  14. Complex Sentence • contains one independent clause (IC) and at least one dependent clause (DC).   • There are many exceptions, but these two patterns will help you punctuate most complex sentences:  IC  DC. (No comma is necessary if the IC comes first in the sentence.) DC, IC. (If the DC comes first, you must use a comma.)

  15. Dependent Clause (DC) • A dependent clause is a meaningful group of words that contains both a subject and a verb • A dependent clause (DC) can NOT stand alone as a sentence   • EX. After I eat bananas • I eat bananas.

  16. IC DC. IC: I went on Facebook.DC: After I got home from practiceIf the IC comes before the DC, you do not need a comma. I went on Facebook after I got home from practice.

  17. DC, IC. IC: I went on Facebook.DC: After I got home from practiceIf the DC comes before the IC, you need a comma after the DC.After I got home from practice, I went on Facebook.

  18. Some Practice • Identify these sentences as complex or compound. • If the sentence is compound, identify the independent clauses. • If the sentence is complex, identify the independent clause and the dependent clause. • TURN IN YOUR PAPER WHEN YOU FINISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EXAMPLES • After they finished studying, Kayla and Marissa went to the movies.  • I tried to speak Spanish, and my friend tried to speak English.   • The students are studying because they have a test tomorrow. • When he handed in his homework, he forgot to give the teacher the last page.   • We went ice skating, but they went bowling. • Tiana and Hakeem went to the movies after they finished studying. • The teacher returned the homework after she noticed the error.  • Alejandro played football, and Maria went shopping.
