3. Start Date Defined: Is the effective date on which an academic appointment begins.

4. Normal Start Date Whenever possible, appointments subject to the eight-year limit (Assistant Rank Faculty) should be made effective July 1. ***The expectation for promotion is at the time of the sixth year review.

5. Start Date Other than July 1: Academic appointments in the School of Medicine are fiscal year appointments. An appointment of an Assistant Rank Faculty may be for a period of less than two years. If an appointment is effective other than July 1, the end/thru date shall normally end on the second June 30 following the appointment date.

6. Mid-year Start Date Defined: Is when an academic appointee begins his/her appointment between January 1st through June 30 is considered to be a “Mid-year Start Date”. A start date from July 2nd thru Dec 31st is not considered a “Mid-year” start.

7. Calculating Start Date and End Date: For Appointments that Start Other than July 1: An appointment of an Assistant Professor may be for a period of less than two years. An appointment effective date other than July 1 shall normally end on the second June 30 following.

8. Calculating Start Date and End Date Con’t: If an appointment starts other than July 1: Count the next – first June 30, and the second June 30 to determine the thru/end date for that review period.

9. Calculating Start Date and End Date Con’t: For example: If the appointment begins on Oct 1, 2008. Count the next two June 30s: June 30, 2009 (1) June 30, 2010 (2) Your end date will be: June 30, 2010 Your next review due is: July 1, 2010

13. Year Zero Option Defined:(SOM Practice Only) The “Year Zero Option” is a School of Medicine Practice Only! This is not used on campus and it may change at any time. This is an option for all new faculty appointments that have “Mid-year” start dates to postpone the start of their academic review period to begin at the next July 1. (This will actually give you 3 June 30s instead of 2). The period between the actual start date and the next July 1 is considered to be the “Year Zero”. The purpose of the Year Zero Option is to allow new faculty time to transition to UCSD and to prepare for their first academic review. The “Year Zero Option” will not effect the limitation on Total Period of Service (8 year probationary period).

14. Requesting the Year Zero Option: All new academic appointments that have a “Mid-year” start date need to complete and submit, at the time of initial appointment, a School of Medicine “Mid Year Appointment Form”. The candidate will need to select one of two “Options” listed on the form: Option 1: Year Zero Option, where the candidate may “elect” to have their review cycle and academic review period start on the next July 1, following their start date. Option 2: This option will allow the candidate to “forego” the year zero option as listed under Option 1 above. Once this form is completed (including signature), it is to be included with submission of the new academic appointment file to the Dean’s Office, SOM. (See form.)
