  2. Group 1 Assignment MAPPING OUT THE STRATEGY FOR RESTORING HAMMOND’S FERRY FLOODPLAIN IN NORTH AUGUSTA, SC. AND RECONNECTING THE OLD PIT LAKES TO THE RIVER. Background: This site was mined for clay in the early 1900s, later became a natatorium, and finally the area was left to fill with water to become a pond/swamp. The ponds became a DOT treatment area in the 1950s, receiving water from the bridge and upper watershed.

  4. Group 2 Assignment MAPPING OUT THE STRATEGY FOR RESTORING FLOODPLAIN FOREST Background: this floodplain forest was converted to agricultural use 175 years ago, originally used for rice production, then cotton and now rotating crops. Savannah River rarely overbanks in this area as there is a 22-river mile pool created by the New Savannah Bluff Lock & Dam

The bog was timbered and the adjacent land mined for kaolin in the 1950s. The “reclamation” was to fill the pond initially with a rubble dam. No action was taken on stockpiled sandy clay and it has remained so since the 50’s. Heavily used for off-road vehicles. Exceptional bog below the pond.
