  2. Warm Up: What event do you think is happening in this photo and what from the painting makes you think that?

  4. Arguments AGAINST Texas Annexation After the Revolution, most Texans wanted to be part of the fabulous United States! We don’t want you!!!! Reason #1 - Mexico Mexico still did not accept that Texas won the Revolution and never formally recognized the Republic… if the U.S. annexed Texas, Mexico might go to war because they believed that Texas legally belong to them! Republic of Texas

  5. Reason #2 - Slavery There were 26 states in the U.S. … 13 are free states (no slavery) and 13 are slave states. The U.S. needed to maintain a balance in the U.S. Congress… Texas would tip that balance over to which side??? Which states would have more power on Congress? Slave States 13 Free States 13

  6. Reason #3 - Texas’ Debt Texas borrowed a lot of money to pay for the Revolution. The Republic also had created more debt with worthless money! If annexed, the U.S. would have to take on that debt! Until Texas could pay the U.S. (and the other countries) the money it owed, the U.S. did not want to make Texas a state.

  7. Arguments FOR Texas Annexation Reason #1 - Manifest Destiny – the belief that the United States was meant to expand from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean

  8. Reason #2 – Economic Growth – Texas and the rest of the West provided more land for settlement, farming and trade opportunities.

  9. Statehood TERMS OF TEXAS ANNEXATION Texas could become a state as soon as Texans voted for annexation and adopted a state constitution. ANNEXATION? Texas could keep its public lands but would have to sell some to pay off its debt to the United States. The United States would provide military protection and postal service to Texas. Texas would enter the United States as a STATE, not as a TERRITORY.

  10. Texas officially entered the United States on December 29, 1845. On February 19, 1846, at a ceremony at the capitol in Austin, President Anson Jones declared “The Republic of Texas is no more”. Texas’ the first governor, J. Pinckney Henderson took over as the leader of the 28th state.

  11. Exit Ticket: With your partner, analyze the political cartoon, “The Marriage of Texas.” Who does the star represent? Who does the woman represent? Who does the eagle represent? Who is conducting the marriage ceremony?

WHEN the Lone Star of Texas arose in the West,Pale and dimly it shone from its orbit on high,For the Mexican Eagle had flown from his nest,And his broad dusky wings overshadowed the sky… And now in the flag of the Union, that starIn a bright constellation unceasingly glows.And long may it shine, in peace or in war,A beacon to friends, or a terror to foes. Re-write the excerpts in everyday language to reflect the author’s message.
