  3. S- Statement “The World on the Turtle’s Back,” an Iroquois creation story, provides a snapshot of the Iroquois’ values and everyday life. The story shows that a balanced world was important to the Iroquois people.

  4. Example For instance, the right-handed twin and the left-handed twin kept the world balanced by creating different kinds of creatures. “The right-handed twin made the deer, and the left-handed twin made the mountain lion which kills the deer” (29).

  5. E- Explain The Iroquois knew that if there were no mountain lions to kill the deer, the deer would overpopulate the land. For this reason, having balance in the world was essential.

  6. K- Conclude The Iroquois valued balance. They did not see creatures like the mountain lion as “bad” because they would kill other creatures. Instead, they understood that this balance of nature was necessary for their world to run correctly.

  8. Tips… • Put the title of the story in quotation marks since it is a short story. • Use ellipses if you want to skip words in a quote. “The left-handed twin chose a mere stick…the right-handed twin pick out the deer antler…” (30). • Three dots…skipping some words. • Four dots….skipping entire sentences. • Put the page number in parenthesis.
