A Woman’s Place in the 19th Century • Women could not have careers. • Had to obey fathers, husbands, and brothers. • Could be beaten if they did something to anger their father, husband, or brother. • Received less education than males. • Women’s sole purpose was to marry and have children. • All of the women’s possessions belonged to her father or her husband when she married.

  19. Social Classes – People from different classes did not mix socially. • The aristocracy did not even need to work for a living. Their wealth was inherited. • The merchant class could be quite wealthy, but they were looked down on by the aristocracy because they were “in trade.” They manufactured goods and shipped them around the world for trade.

  20. Social Classes • Small business and shop owners were below the merchants, and were not as wealthy. • Laborers were below the merchants and just made enough to live on. • The poor were usually sent into the streets to beg or were put into poor houses. They often turned to crime to survive.
