Understanding Mad Cow Disease: A Dangerous Prion Infection

Mad Cow Disease, scientifically known as Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), is a fatal brain disorder caused by prions, which are misfolded proteins that induce abnormal changes in normal proteins. This degenerative disease primarily affects cattle, damaging their central nervous system and leading to symptoms like lack of coordination and cognitive decline. In rare cases, humans can develop variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) after consuming contaminated beef. Although transmission through milk is considered highly unlikely, preventative measures are enforced to reduce risk.
