The Automatic thinking patterns in trauma-experienced people: • All-or-nothing thinking : “All Russians are criminals ” • Over-focusing on the negatives\ignoring positives : “there are only bad news on tv , everything is worsened” • Jumping to conclusions: “My boy is late, he must have had a faight and been taken by police. • Catastrophizing : “The child is crying she must have been abused by ossetians” • Overgeneralizing: “That government official was rude, therefore all government officials are rude ” • Emotional reasoning: “I feel frightened, therefore this must be a dangerous place” • Intolerance of uncertainty: “I can not trust a person until I know everything about them ” • Superstitious thinking: “Ever since I started carrying a pistol in my bag I haven’t seen any Russian soldiers , it saves me ”

There are six main steps to learning cognitive restructuring: • Step 1 : Identify the situation-what is trigger of distress. • Step 2 : Identify the emotion – rate their intensity • Step 3: Identify thoughts –including automatic thoughts preceded emotion • Step 4 : Challenging thoughts and beliefs. Evidence for and against the thoughts. • Step 5: Respond to unhelpful thoughts – replace automatic thoughts helpfully. • Step 6 : Reevaluate beliefe/ thoughts/ emotion.

  6. Homework Rationale: • Involves client in the process of therapy • Places responsibility on client as participant in treatment • Enhance ability to use techniques • Independent management of problems • Enhance of self-control • More focus on progress, increased motivation
