  1. Mobile Computing: Trials and Tribulations This presentation follows the concept to current state timeline of mobile computing at Fidelity E&P. Trials, tribulations and success.

  2. Benefits • Remote Access to Corporate Email • Remote Access to Corporate Servers • Remote Access to Enterprise GIS • Remote Access to Cloud Based Third Party Software • Remote Word Processing • Mapping and Navigation • Vehicle Tracking for Maintenance and Safety

  3. Initial Configuration

  4. Initial Configuration

  5. Pros & Cons • Pros • Physical characteristics of the laptop held up to field elements • Internet connection was reliable • NetMotion VPN was reliable and provided a flawless connection to the corporate network • GPS connection was reliable and fast to load on the ArcReader map • ArcReader map was simple, easy to use, customizable

  6. Pros & Cons • Cons • Internal characteristics of the laptop provided poor performance • GPS on Sierra Wireless Modem was ran through a DB9 Serial Connection and was unreliable • GPS connection was reliable but the GPS receiver was susceptible to damage • ArcReader was outdated technology and lacked the ability to navigate and collect GPS data. • ArcPad was too complex of a program for its intended purpose • Docking station rattles

  7. Current Configuration

  8. Current Configuration

  9. Pros & Cons • Pros • Improved internal characteristics of the laptop provided faster performance • Decreased size of GPS receiver/no extra cord susceptible to damage • Stiffer docking station and mount • ArcGIS for Windows Mobile is far superior then ArcReader

  10. Pros & Cons • Cons • 3G works but is slow • Docking station still rattles • GPS receiver is still susceptible to damage

  11. Benefits ArcGIS for Windows Mobile • Completely customizable using the Ready-to-Deploy App or ArcGIS Runtime SDK for Windows Mobile • Ability to collect GPS data and differentially correct if need be (GeoCollector for ArcGIS for Windows Mobile) • Ability to query, sketch, edit • Can switch between devices (vehicle-mounted Windows, touch devices and handheld Windows Mobile devices) • Can navigate using ESRI Street Map • Can use cloud based data as basemap layers • Can set up custom tasks and forms to be synced back to a SDE database

  12. Workflows ArcGIS for Windows Mobile • Server Workflow • The server workflow is a server-centric mobile solution that leverages ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online, and Portal for ArcGIS. • This workflow is particularly useful when real-time or close to real-time synchronization between field devices is necessary.

  13. Workflows ArcGIS for Windows Mobile • Desktop Workflow • The desktop workflow follows a check in/check out procedure and requires a manual effort for synchronization. • This workflow is useful when you have a small number of deployments and real-time synchronization is not necessary. Also this workflow does not require an ArcGIS for Server license.

  14. Desktop Workflow

  15. Future Considerations • Move to 4G • Reduce the amount of equipment involved (Mobile Broadband/GPS Card) • Find ways to reduce the rattle • Develop tasks and forms using ArcGIS Runtime SDK for Windows Mobile • Incorporate the Server workflow
