  1. Evolution & Genetics We will begin the discussions and presentations momentarily.

  2. Philosophy of Truth • What is the point of the group work we’re conducting? • To distinguish valid arguments from fallacious ones. • To examine the definition of “proof.” • To establish some principles and characteristics that distinguish the scientific worldview from others.

  3. What is Science? • Objective Reality: science is a method for understanding things that can be measured and observed. • It’s central process is the construction and testing of hypotheses. • Good science has the following characteristics: • Objectivity • Repeatability • Predictive ability

  4. What Science is Not • Science has no way of dealing with quantities that cannot be objectively measured with current technology. • Examples: • Art, aesthetics, beauty, subjective interpretations. • Truth. Science can measure uncertainty, but not eliminate it. • Souls, deities, afterlives, etc.

  5. What is True? • Negative proof: • Just because you can’t prove something, doesn’t make it false • Parsimony: • Science assumes the most likely explanations of phenomena are true • The simplest valid explanation is preferred. • Beware Falacious Arguments! • Russell’s Teapot • Telological Arguments • Arguments from Ignorance • Etc.
