  2. Install PDCC To install from Internet: Connect with browser to: http://www.iris.edu/manuals/pdcc_request.htm Fill out registration form Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

  3. Run PDCC • Click on the icon on your desktop OR • Go to your installation directory and click on the icon there OR • Go to your installation directory in a terminal window • Type: java -jar run_pdcc.jar Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

  4. Load the PR dataless SEED • Load the sample file PR_Tonga.dataless • File -> Import -> SEED file • Watch the progress bar below and wait for it to say OK • If you see an exception error in your terminal window, please raise your hand Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

Select station STVI • Using the Tree View, navigate to the station STVI and select it • If you cannot see station STVI, click the tab next to “Station” • If you cannot see “Station” click the tab next to “Volume: PR_Tonga.dataless ” • When selected, observe the station information located in the viewing window on the right Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

  6. Select channel BHE • Under the station STVI, you’ll find a list of three channels • Select the first channel, named BHE • Observe the channel information in the view window on the right Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

  7. Make a copy of BHE • Make sure that the BHE channel is selected in the tree • From the menu, select Edit -> Copy • The status bar on the bottom should indicate that the channel is marked for copying Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

  8. Paste a new copy of BHE • Keeping the selection on channel BHE, go to the menu again and select Edit-> Paste • You will observe PDCC pasting a copy of the channel after the selected channel • Wait until the status bar says, OK Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

  9. Create a new epoch time • You are now presented with a dialogue box asking for a start time: • Enter correct date (time is optional): “2006,245” Hit RETURN • Time field will auto-fill Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

Contiguous times • NOTE: PDCC will automatically close the previous epoch, for that channel, to match the new epoch • This way, you have contiguous channel epoch times (or effective times) • Watch that effective times map to waveform data time coverage Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

  11. Alternatively, start fromscratch • Select a “new” BHE channel • Select File->New->Analog Filter Stage (53) Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

  13. Add some coefficients • As a hypothetical exercise, let’s add two rows to the numerators in Blockette 54 • Select Blockette 54, Stage 1 • Click the button marked “Number of Numerators: 0” Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

  14. Add some coefficients • We have no rows here, so we start our first one by clicking “Add a row” • Congrats, you’ve just added a row of coefficients. But we want a second one • Click the row button marked “1” to add another row Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

Add some coefficients • Now that we have two rows, let’s modify the values • Make the first numerator coefficient “1.23” • Make the second numerator coefficient “3.21” • Notice that if you hit RETURN, TAB, or click in another box, your entry is validated Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

Updated views • Did you notice what happened? • Both the Tree View and the Blockette View updated their numbers to reflect the two coefficients you have added. • You can discard changes to coefficients by hitting the Restore button, provided you haven’t closed the edit window.   17. Delete a row • Now we decide we only want to keep the second coefficient • The first one must be deleted • To delete a row, hold down the SHIFT key and select the row button • Do this for Row 1 now • Click the Close button now Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

Make a new abbreviation • Blockettes many times point to other blockettes to define standard abbreviations or names that are used repeatedly • You can find the list of abbreviations in the Dictionary category, which is above the Station category • Select the “V Volts” abbreviation in the Tree View under Dictionary Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

  19. Make a new abbreviation • Perform a Copy followed by a Paste of this Abbreviation • In the second copy of the Volts abbreviation, change unit name of “V” to a dollar sign • Now change the Unit description to “Money in Reals” • Changes are automatic Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

Assign a new abbreviation • Now that we have a new dictionary reference, a new kind of unit, let us make use of this • Return the the Blockette 54, stage 2 that we edited earlier • Click on Signal output units • Click on the selector tool in the Unit lookup code field Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

  21. Assign a new abbreviation • Select our new abbreviation from the list presented • We have actually moved the Blockette 54 to point to a different abbreviation Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

Alternative • It is possible to also create a new abbreviation without performing a copy • Click on the BHE channel • Find the Units of signal response field • Click the button and go to the popup window • In the lookup code selector, find Make New Abbreviation Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

  24. Alternative • A new dictionary pops up in the main edit panel • Change the abbreviation to ‘M/S/S’ • Change the description to ‘Acceleration in meters per second squared’ Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

Import an abbreviation • Notice that we have a row view of the Steim decoder keys • We could edit these values if we dared • What if we want our new BHE channel to output Steim 1 compression? • We could make a copy of the Steim 2, rename it, then hand edit the keys • That would be time-consuming Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

  27. Import an abbreviation • Let us instead take advantage of the information that is already generated • Let us import a Steim 1 abbreviation from another file! Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

Import an abbreviation • Goto File -> Import -> SEED file • Open the DATALESS.US file • Wait for the import to complete • Search through the dictionary listing for Steim Integer Compression (effectively Steim 1 compression) • Select and view this Blockette • 6 keys for Steim 1 -- 14 keys for Steim 2 Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

Import an abbreviation • With the Steim Integer Compression blockette selected, select Edit -> Copy from the menu • Now, go back to our PR volume and find the Dictionary blockettes • Select the Dictionary category node and hit Paste • Now you have Steim 1 compression added to your dictionary Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

  30. Assign new abbreviation • Assignment: Edit the new BHE channel to reflect Steim 1 data compression • You can apply this same principle to other Blockettes to save time and effort Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

Export our new dataless SEED • Now that we have gone to this effort to create a new dataless, let’s write it out to a file • Select any node inside the PR dataless volume • In the Menu, go to File -> Export -> Dataless SEED File • You are now given a file selector to name and place your file on disk • Pick a directory and enter a filename • Click Save and wait for OK in the status bar Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil

Read back our dataless SEED • Now, we want to prove to ourselves that we actually wrote those changes to a dataless SEED file • Import the dataless SEED file you wrote out • There will be a new Volume entry with your file name. • Examine the Volume for your changes Data Management Workshop Sao Paulo, Brazil
