  3. Overview of GERD GERD occurs when stomach acid and sometimes bile refluxes in the esophagus Over time the backwash of acid can irritate and inflame the lining of the esophagus

  4. Signs & Symptoms Burning sensation in chest & sometimes throat Chest pain Difficult swallowing (also called dysphagia) Dry cough Sore throat Regurgitation of food or sour liquid (acid reflex) Feeling of lump in throat

  5. Treatments Usually begins with over the counter medications that control acid Ant-acids that control neutralize stomach acid: Maalox, Mylanta, Rolaids and Tums

  6. Treatments Continued… Medications to reduce acid production Cimtidine, Famotidine, Nizatidine & Ranitidine The H-2 receptor blockers do not act as quickly as ant-acids, however they do provide longer relief Medications that block acid production and heal the esophagus Over the counter proton pump inhibitors include lansoprazole

Treatments continued… • Prescription strength medications • Medications to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter • GERD medications are sometimes combined to increase effectiveness • The are three types of surgery that can act as treatments as well • Nissenfuncoplication Reinforce lower esophageal sphincter • EnodCinchendoluminalgastroplication creates barrier preventing stomach acid reflex • Stretta procedure Forms scar tissue in the esophagus
