  2. What is Periodontal Disease? A disease that attacks the gum and bone and around the teeth.

  3. How do you Get Periodontal Disease? • Not taking care of your oral hygiene • Acid Bacteria that forms cavities • If cavities are not taken care of they turn into gingivitis • Gingivitis if not taken care of turns into Periodontal Disease

  7. How Do you Know if You Have Periodontal Disease? • Bad breath that won't go away • Red or swollen gums • Tender or bleeding gums • Painful chewing • Loose teeth • Sensitive teeth • Receding gums

  9. How is Periodontal Disease Related to Pregnancy? Mothers who have periodontal disease are more likely to have a preterm delivery or a baby with low birth weight.

  10. Premature Babies A premature baby is born when the mother goes into labor early In the United States, about 12.8 percent of babies are born prematurely.

  11. Low Birth-weight Babies Babies that are born less than five pounds and eight ounces are considered low birth weight. About one in every twelve babies that are just born in the United States are born with low birth weight.

  12. Risk Factors for Premature Babies Having a premature baby can cause the baby to have breathing problems, a greater risk to brain damage, problems in the nervous system, trouble maintaining their body temperature, they are more prone to infection, and death.

  13. Risk Factors for Low Birth-weight Babies • low oxygen levels at birth • Inability to maintain body temperature • Difficulty feeding and gaining weight • Infection • Breathing problems such as respiratory distress • Sudden death

How to prevent Periodontal Disease There are ways to prevent periodontal disease such as: • Scaling and root planing, are two common treatments of gum disease, are perfectly safe during pregnancy. • Visiting the dentist is one highly recommended for pregnant mothers with periodontal disease, but regardless you should visit the dentist at least once every six months. • Taking good care of your oral hygiene • Brush your teeth two times a day and floss every time before you brush
