  1. Must We Be Perfect To Be Pleasing Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. John 17:17

  2. Growing as an Individual 9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment. Philippians 1:9

  3. Growing as an Individual • No matter one’s age or years of faithfulness, all will of necessity be growing in knowledge (2 Pet. 1:5-11) • should be especially obvious in younger (1 Tim. 4:12-16) • Paul recognized the need to keep growing and moving forward himself (Phil. 3:7-14) • even Christ was not exempted from the necessity of growth (Lk. 2:52)!

  4. Growing as an Individual • Spiritual growth, including knowledge, commanded, and if lacking is sinful (Heb. 5:11-14)(Hos. 4:6) • study of Scriptures necessary (2 Tim. 2:15) • must be able to discern truth from error (Acts 17:11-12) • must be able to discern our own sins (James 1:21-25) • very real danger of falling irrevocably away without proper growth (2 Pet. 1:9)

  5. Knowledge and Fellowship with God 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. Mark 16:16

  6. Knowledge and Fellowship with God • Lack of knowledge itself not necessarily sinful • example of new Christian (Heb. 5:12-14) • may not know that gambling is sinful and why, but if not participating in it, then no sin necessarily involved • even without knowledge, new Christian has support and example of many more experienced brethren (Phil. 3:15-17) • as noted, we all have many things we do not yet know • beyond first principles, we may have not had the opportunity to study a certain passage in detail, yet when some related issue arises, we have the foundation and ability to continue to find answers in the Scriptures

  7. Knowledge and Fellowship with God • What must one know to be saved? • must believe God exists, and that He is good (Heb. 11:6) • must believe that the gospel is God’s authoritative word (Mk. 16:15-16) • must believe that prior to baptism, we are lost in our sins and in need of repentance and grace (Acts 2:37-38) • must believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God (Acts 8:36-37) • True that these things are the same as the steps of conversion, because we are judged by what we do with our knowledge, and not the knowledge itself

  8. Knowledge and Fellowship with God • Does not mean that we can be faithful resting in our knowledge of the absolute minimum • God requires that we seek Him diligently throughout our life (2 Tim. 2:15)(Heb. 4:11)(Heb. 11:6) • the vinedresser only cuts off the branches that are incapable of bearing fruit, not those that continue to show promise (Jn. 15:1-6) • Also, lack of knowledge directly contributes to temptation and sin, and we will be judged even of things done in ignorance (Acts 17:30)

  9. Application to the Church 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 1 John 1:7

  10. Application to the Church • God • Fellowship with God  Fellowship with brethren • (1 Jn. 1:3, 7) • A • B • new Christian • diligently studying • growth evident • soon be bearing fruit • older Christian • diligently studying • still growing • bears much fruit • neither knows everything at all times • unity because when issue arises, both will submit to same standard and will come to agreement (1 Cor. 1:10)

  11. Application to the Church • God • Fellowship with God  Fellowship with brethren • (1 Jn. 1:3, 7) • A • B • old Christian • diligently studying • still growing • bears much fruit • older Christian • diligently studying • still growing • bears much fruit • neither knows everything at all times • unity because when issue arises, both will submit to same standard and will come to agreement (1 Cor. 1:10)

  12. Application to the Church • God • Fellowship with God  Fellowship with brethren • (1 Jn. 1:3, 7) • A • B • unfaithful • not studying • no growth • no fruit • older Christian • diligently studying • still growing • bears much fruit • neither knows everything at all times • no unity because when issue arises, they cannot even agree on their standard of judgment

  13. Conclusion • we don’t have to all know everything to be perfectly joined together in the same mind and judgment • we are all always growing, maturing, and learning • however, there is a distinction between receiving one who is immature in their knowledge and one who teaches or practices false doctrine • one is still in fellowship with God (and by extension their brethren) and the other isn’t • one of the best things to do for your brethren: Grow!
