  1. WP4 – PU CLS Ocean Monitoring from the Observations Stéphanie GUINEHUT, Gilles LARNICOL Marie-Hélène RIO, Sandrine MULET Gael NICOLAS

  2. WP4 – PU CLS Ocean Monitoring from the Observations • Introduction • R&D activities • Reanalysis • Service & Users • MyOcean II – WP5

  3. Reminder of the Ocean Monitoring System • 2 main tasks carried on as part of the Ocean Monitoring System : • Development of an observation-based method that combines in-situ and satellite observations to provide 3D ocean state estimates RT, RAN • Improvement of upstream datasets via validation/calibration activities • The Observation-based method is a three steps method : • Step 1: Vertical projection of satellite data (SLA+SST) using a multiple linear regression method and covariances deduced from historical observations  synthetic fields • Step 2: Combination of synthetic and in-situ profiles using an optimal interpolation method  combined fields • Step3: Use of thermal wind equation with a ref level at the surface to combine current fields from satellite altimetry + MDT with our 3D combined T/S fields  3D T/S/H/U/V fields • Weekly RT production of Global T/S fields, [0-1500]m, 1/3° grid • Reanalysis of the years 1993-2010 of Global T/S/H/U/V fields

  4. Reminder of the Ocean Monitoring System • 2 main tasks carried on as part of the Ocean Monitoring System : • Development of an observation-based method that combined in-situ and satellite observations to provide 3D ocean state estimates RT, RAN • Improvement of upstream datasets via validation/calibration activities • Improvement of upstream datasets : • Validation tool of in-situ T/S profiles before they enter CLS / Mercator / DFO systems – can be extended to other groups • Calibration of upstream datasets – candidate for replacement of existing ones

  5. MyOcean milestones • Improvement of the observation-based method:V0  V2

  6. R&D activities • Improvement of the observation-based method: • 1st step of the method  3D T/S fields -New statistics: accepted publication in Ocean Science : A global comparison of Argo and satellite altimetry observationsA. -L. Dhomps, S. Guinehut, P.-Y. Le Traon, and G. LarnicolOS, 2011, Vol.7, pp. 175-183, SRef-ID: 1812-0792/os/2011-7-175 - Test of new HR input data sets (SST & SSS) as part of the MESCLA R&D project • 3rd step of the method  3D H/U/V fields • Validation of the thermal wind equation method using model fields (Glorys)  accepted publication in Deep Sea Research II: A new estimate of the global 3-D geostrophic ocean circulation based on satellite data and in situ measurements Mulet, S., Rio, M.-H., Mignot, A., Guinehut, S., and Morrow, R, Deep-Sea Res. Pt. II, in press, 2012. • Impact study of different T/S fields and MDT in the thermal wind equation method  work still in progress

  7. R&D activities • Improvement of upstream datasets: • Validation tool of in-situ T/S profiles – new tests developed, in consistency with Model feedbacks • Calibration of eight SST products - potential candidate for replacement of existing ones • Lots of “D” to switch from V0 to V1 in situ TAC T/S profiles – many interactions with Ifremer, lots of development (new format, new data organization) – but ! additional sources of data

  8. Reanalysis • V1 reanalysis has been extended to the year 2010 : • Scientific exploitation of the results instead of running a new version with very poor improvement • Publication just published in OSD: • High resolution 3D temperature and salinity fields derived from in situ and satellite observations. Guinehut, S., Dhomps, A.-L., Larnicol, G., and Le Traon, P.-Y., Oc. Sci. Discuss., 9, 2012.

  10. Service & Users • RT system – changes: • Communication to the MyO Central SD if necessary

  11. Service & Users • RT system – incidents: • Systematic communication to the MyO Central SD

  12. Service & Users • RT system – MIS-GW: • March : MFC GLO indisponibility is for March 30th due to a global network failure at CLS • June : MFC GLO indisponibility is for June 29th due to a global network failure at CLS • September : Pourcentage in September is explained in the next paragraph. This is related to the MIS change form of September 24th.

  13. Service & Users • 2011 Users (thanks to the MIS-GW and the transaction accounting)

  14. Service & Users • 2011 Users: • Nb of different users: 43 • Who they are: very difficult to get the information from the Central SD • What variable do they ask for: • 76 % of the users ask for Temperature • 50 to 60 % of the users ask for Salinity and Currents • Absolute height is poorly requested • What depth range do they ask for: • 43 % ask for 0-1500 m • 20 % ask for surface only • What geographical area do they ask for: • 30 % ask for global ocean • 40 % ask for a zone in the Atl.
