  2. The Early Years • The idea of a Local Information System was first discussed in 2002. • By end 2003, NIMS (Neighbourhood Information Management System) was launched. • The site was a collaboration between LBN and its Local Strategic Partnership. • The LSP supplied and requested for the data to be on the website and the NIMS Team uploaded it on the system • By 2006 it was realised that other off-the-shelf systems were becoming prominent. • In 2007 Instant Atlas was acquired.

  3. What is Newham INFO? • Store of Demographic and Statistical information about the Borough • Holds data at various Geographies; Borough, Community Forum, Ward, LSOA. • Holds borough level information for all London Boroughs • Holds Olympic Borough, London and GB comparators.

  4. The Need for Information • Council Policy and Strategies need to be built on solid evidence. • Empower council staff and the public to source their own data rather than a reliance on LBNs demography service. • Demographic information required to support; • EQIAs • JSNA • LEA • Newham Resilience Agenda • Councils being forced to allocate reducing resources more effectively • Health and Social Care Bill Public Health moving into Local Authorities (April 2013) What data will be required by LA’s How can we get this data? How can we store it? Combine with what we already have? Newham INFO to act the hub for this data

  5. Managing the Data • NIMS became very Data heavy • Too much time spend on updating datasets • No time left for development Solution • Brought in OCSI data packs to maintain the core datasets • Focus on presenting information rather than just storing it. • Understanding our audience and their data needs • Able to spend time on developing internal sources • PLASC • Mayhew Population Study • Taking advantage of the technical advances in IAS. • More control of content – embedding pages directly into IAS

  6. Future plans • Linking to GIS/Mapping – through Newham INFO • Exploiting our Corporate GIS technology • Embeddable maps in Reports • Enhanced layers and base mapping in Data Views • Direct feeds into IAS from ONS/OCSI
