  2. What is a social institution? • A social institution is a social form that has its own norms and values instituted within its own structure. These institutions have their own rules and expected behaviors.

  3. Sociology of Religion • Different cultures have different religions • Religions have different beliefs, customs, etc. • However, all religions are organized around beliefs and traditions • Religion has been around for a long time, providing structure to its followers

  4. Karl Marx and Religion • Focused on conflict between different religions • Oppression of beliefs in certain cultures • Separates cultures, creates stratification and hierarchy

  5. Functionalist view on Religion • Religion is powerful because it influences beliefs • Unifies individuals • Provides a sense of belonging

  6. Max Weber and Religion • Religion helps support other social institutions • All social institutions influence and connect to one another
