Survey Question #15: Teachers are professional, setting a good example for students. Survey Question #16: Teachers are enthusiastic, creative and encourage a desire to learn.

Selection of books ELA dept. decides the works based on the following criteria: • Age-appropriateness • International mindedness – In this criterion, we either read works translated into English and/or works set up in another country and/or works written in English by authors from non-English speaking heritage • Works listed in AP/IB required/recommended list • Balance of genres (fiction, non-fiction/ novels, short-stories, drama, biography/memoirs, gothic, adventure, Shakespeare, mass-media, social-networking ) • Balance of time-period: classics, modern, contemporary,  etc. • Balance of genders- male and female authors • Balance of continents/ cultures • Issues relevant to the age-group • Current issues • Inter-disciplinary studies

  8. Selection of books continued • All this cannot be balanced in a given year and therefore, we look at it as divisions. We try to accomplish this balance as Middle and Upper School group of works. All the works, including summer reading assignment(s), are approved by respective division director. Other assessments are based on vertical alignment expectations and are monitored by Department Chair. • Summer reading is not just for leisure reading. Usually two works are assigned; one has an assignment that goes with it and the other one is usually discussed in class during the first two-three weeks of school and there is a summer reading test. The summer reading assignment(s)  designed are in line with AP/IB assessments and are scaffolded for vertical alignment. They are mainly geared towards reinforcing the learning outcomes of the previous grade level. • We met as a department on April 18th to review the works and assess them based on the above criteria. Our teachers are looking into some new titles and I am working on compiling an updated list for all the works to be read next year. Once I have the list updated, I will get it approved by the division director and publish it on our website.

  9. Budget Update • 2% cut in state funding for the upcoming 2012/13 school year • Will eliminate 3 positions from the school – we are adding teachers to deal with growth in HS and Ops Person but both of these moves will be revenue neutral due to student growth and other factors • Donations to PPF will now go directly to the school account and we will be able to better track and show expenditures • Currently developing our budget but we have to close our bond sales to see final amounts available • We are close to finalizing a plan that will put NHP teachers and staff on the same salary bands as other schools. We have done this through bond savings, better spending, and continued parent support • I feel confident about where we are fiscally if we get continued broad support for fees and donations to the PPF • Will release proposed budget, once we finalize all numbers
