  2. S Setting

  3. S The Setting • The novel The Maze Runner is set in the place that they call the Glade, a rather large courtyard within the Maze. • There are several structures that are very important to the storyline, such as the box, the “elevator” in the middle of the glade, it brings supplies and new people to work in the Glade. • There’s also the homestead, the makeshift settlement placed in the Glade.

  4. S Setting • Though the homestead exists, most Gladers sleep outside. • There’s also the makeshift cafeteria, used by frypan, the cook. • Then the four corners of the Glade are laced with the jobsites to run the Glade to be the community it is.

  5. C Characters

  6. Thomas Thomas is the main character of the book, and the book is narrated from his perspective. At the beginning Thomas is very shy. Then when he was about to fall asleep during the first night, he mentioned how he wanted to become a runner. The next day after seeing the terrifying griever, a monster that roams the Maze at night, he still wanted to be a runner. He’s pretty calm, for a person that supposedly got his life taken away from him. Some of his traits include him being very honest, brave, loyal, bright, courageous, and passionate. C

  7. Alby C Alby was kind of nice, but he was being a bit of a jerk in the beginning. He turned out to be kind of a nice guy, but then he got pricked by a griever. Then he went through the changing, and no one has the same personality they do before they get bit. The changing is the process that’s gone through when someone get pricked by a griever, it lasts a few days. The person gets injected with the “grief serum”, it saves them from dying from the griever’s prick. Alby’s pretty tall, he’s confident in his decisions as well. He’s the leader of the Glade too.

  8. S Newt • He’s a really nice guy. He was being pretty nice to Thomas when everyone else was being a jerk. He showed him around, got him aquatinted with life at the Glade, and what’d been happening for the past two years in the Glade. • He also has a limp, it came from a griever attack out in the Maze. • Some character traits of Newt include, tall, nice, helpful, bright, and adventurous.

  9. Teresa • Teresa is the first girl to arrive to the Glade in the history of its two years of existence. • She came one day after Thomas came, which was bizarre, because every month is when they get a new person to the Glade. She also came in a coma with a note that said that everything would change, then she came back to life to say just that, and daze back into her coma. Thomas also felt some kind of connection to her, one day Newt forced him to sit next her, and she started to communicate to him telepathically. • When she woke up from her long coma, she came to see Thomas right away. C

  10. Mihno Mihno is the leader of the runners. The job area of the explorer’s of the Maze. Thomas first meets him when he comes back from a short day of running. Mihno found a dead griever, which had never been done before, since they’re part machine, they assumed they shouldn’t be able to die. That’s how Thomas met Mihno. Mihno later mentored Thomas in his field, and they ran together in the Maze. C

  11. P Plot

  12. P Exposition • In the novel The Maze Runner starts off very slow, Thomas finds himself in a big metal elevator. All he can bring to memory is his name and normal recollections that any human would remember, such as animals or TV. • Thomas comes out a little scared, not knowing of this new society that he was randomly thrown into.

  13. P Exposition • He comes out, and two of the society's leaders greets him, one tries to inform him of the situation, while the other is being a little bit hostile towards him. • He was informed of the situation, as he was in the Glade, a society within a Maze filled with young adults trying to get themselves out. People, they call the creators trapped them in this situation.

  14. P Exposition • Thomas also meet this guy named Gally, he’s kind of a jerk to Thomas. • He told Thomas to go to somewhere that he was definitely not permitted, Newt and Alby were trying to help a boy that’d been pricked by a griever and was going through the changing. • After that they were pretty much arch rivals, from the events that’d unfolded.

  15. P Rising Action • The book takes off like the Apollo, and goes sky high, the plot is to be descried as craziness of EPIC proportions. • Just about a week after Thomas arrives at the Glade he learns about how Mihno found the first “dead” griever they ever saw. • The next day , Mihno and Alby went out into the Maze to take a closer look at the Griever.

  16. P Rising Action • Mihno and Alby didn’t exactly return, until a minute until the four Maze doors were about to close for the night, and they weren’t exactly home free. • Mihno was going as fast as he could dragging an injured Alby, but he just couldn’t run fast enough, not dragging Alby with him. They couldn’t make it in time. Then right when the doors were about to close, Thomas jumped out into the Glade, hoping he’d be of help to Mihno, and a near lifeless Alby.

  17. P Rising Action • Thomas directly disobeyed the most important rule of all, don’t go out into the Maze at night. No one had ever survived a night in the Maze. • Mihno trailed off about Thomas just signed his death warrant, and just left Alby for death. • Thomas tied him in ivy, and lead the grievers away from him.

  18. P Rising Action • Then the griever was chasing Thomas through the Maze, and somehow, he found Mihno hiding in ivy. • He pulled him aside, and they both let them pass then they started running in the other direction. They went to the cliff in that section of the Maze and they led them off the cliff. They just seemed to disappear at some point, not just fall to their deaths.

  19. P Rising Action • After that a gathering had been called between the leaders of the Glade and Thomas, to discuss what was to happen next. • Thomas had broken a rule, the biggest rule of all, don’t enter the Maze unless you’re a runner. • Some people had different views on what to do, some had the same. • Mihno spoke the bold suggestion for Thomas to replace Mihno as the keeper of the runners. This forced everyone’s jaw to drop wide open.

  20. P Rising Action • Gally, the others, Newt, and even Thomas thought that that was completely absurd. • Gally trailed off about his conspiracies of Thomas, and thought that he was a spy sent by the creators. Mentioning that that’s why he was so good at everything. • He also felt like it was the time to talk smack to Mihno because of his bold suggestion. Mihno shoved in the face, and his body went flying like jet engine.

  21. P Rising Action • Then he left the room trailing his path in anger and madness. He hadn’t been seen by anyone after that. • It’d been rumored that he had went into the Maze out of his anger, and hadn’t come back. There were also other rumors of him being hidden by his allies.

  22. P Rising Action • Thomas was punished by a day in “slammer”. • He then became a runner and started his training as one. • Then, Thomas was told by Newt that he had to spend as long as possible sitting next to the girl that’d mysteriously been sent to them through the box.

  23. P Rising Action • At some point while sitting next to her, he had a new found realization of her, he spoke her name, Teresa. • Not too long after he did, she spoke to him, but not the conventional way of conversation, she spoke to him telepathically. It scared right out of his seat, it scared out of the room, the building, even the Glade. He ran, he ran, and ran, for what seemed to be around an hour, turning left and right. For some reason, it felt very familiar to him, to be in the Maze.

  24. P Rising Action • Not too long after, he found his way back to the Glade, and just took a little nap in the wooded area of the Glade. • He woke up to something that no one was all too familiar to, there was no sun, no moon, and it was pretty close to sunset. He also woke up to the sound of Teresa’s voice. • She talked of how she still has some recollection of memory, and them.

  25. P Rising Action • Soon, Alby came, pretty mad about how her waking causing a chain reaction of bad things to happen. Such as another big thing that happened, the four Maze doors hadn’t closed, and it’d past their normal time to shut. • This means that grievers can get into the Glade during the day and night. • The Gladers immediately fortified the homestead, and bugged in.

  26. P Rising Action • Teresa was locked up for triggering the sudden tragic events as well. Alby and Newt suspected her of scheming with the creators. • During the first night, Gally came back out of no where. He was in some crazy trance, or he was mind controlled. All in all, he sounded like one of those crazy people out of a mental institution that are guarded day and night for fear of suicide, even more, homicide…

  27. P Rising Action • Gally said that everyone was basically screwed. • He said that everyone would eventually die, killed off one by one, one a night by the grievers. • Then he took the boards of one of the windows to let the grievers in, and as Newt tried to stop him, he got smack upside the head with a plank of wood.

  28. P Rising Action • Then he jumped into the hands into one of the grievers and got stuck to it. Then all of the grievers retreated back into the Maze. • What he’d said about one Glader coming to an untimely end was true, because during the course of the next few days, there was a death of one Glader a night. • During those few days Mihno and Thomas were running together, because Thomas still hadn’t completed his training.

  29. P Rising Action • The first day that Thomas and Mihno went out, he taught him how to be a runner, obviously. • He taught him the basics, the whole section system, ways to find his way back to the Maze, and all kinds of other stuff. • Then they saw something unusual, they saw a griever, sitting and doing nothing, then all of a sudden it got up and ran towards the cliff. Then it jumped off the cliff, and disappeared after losing some altitude. It wasn’t exactly a normal thing to see.

  30. P Rising Action • Then one day, someone had burned the maps of the Maze. • Alby had also been knocked out cold, because he was the one guarding them. • But as it turns out, Alby burned them. It was because when he went through the changing, he saw what they’d go through, he didn’t wan them to find a way out of the Maze. He didn’t want to go back to the terrible life that awaited.

  31. P Rising Action • Then, later that day, Thomas had a crazy idea that just might have saved them all. • He thought of a new way of comparing the maps, he asked Frypan for cookie sheets, and scavenged the Glade for all the sharpie markers he could find. Then he talked about how the runners had always compared the maps by looking at them, but they never placed one over the other to look for a pattern.

  32. P Rising Action • Then he took two maps from two different sections of the Maze, he replicated one of them onto the clear cookie sheet, and put that on top of the other map. Then they saw a… letter. • Then they knew they had to keep doing this, and as they did, they discovered code words. They made no sense, and they were words, such as float, catch, or bleed.

  33. P Rising Action • Then as they found the rest of the code, no one knew where to put it, or what to do with it. • So Thomas knew what he had to do, he had to go and get pricked by a griever to go through the changing, so he could remember something about the past. • After grievers had attacked and claimed another innocent Glader, Thomas went and attacked them, to intentionally get pricked. Then it happened, he was hit, the grievers left, and everyone rushed in to save him.

  34. P Rising Action • When he’d recovered from the changing, he had called a meeting between the leaders. • He told them of how it was completely his intentions to be pricked, and go through the changing. • He told them that he remembered that he and Teresa created the Maze… • This permanently dropped every single jaw that could’ve existed, and also led to one of the worst awkward silence in human history.

  35. P Rising Action • Everyone then thought that Thomas was the enemy, but it took a while for him to otherwise. • Then he hatched his radical plan of the cliff. He talked of how he and Mihno saw the griever jump off the cliff and disappear into nothingness. • He then said that they would have to do the same, and there would be a computer there for Teresa to punch in the secret code they’d discovered from Thomas’ new idea of comparing the maps.

  36. P Rising Action • Then the leaders kicked Thomas out to discuss the idea. • It took a while, but they agreed to it, and invited him back in. • Alby and Newt said that they’d have to get prepped and ready for war. • Every Glader that agreed to go had some real or makeshift weapon made out of whatever could be salvaged.

  37. CL Climax • The next day when they got to the corridor where the cliff was, the grievers were waiting at the cliff. • Then when they got closer, there were more grievers that enclosed them at the other end of the corridor. • Since Alby was so scared of going back to whatever terrible life he thought that awaited, he sacrificed himself. He did it in hope that the one by one every night rule would still apply. Under the circumstances, after Alby’s death, the grievers weren’t as nice as he’d hoped.

  38. CL Climax • After the grievers had feasted, and bragged, as what it looked. They attacked, but the Gladers stayed together, they made a patch for Thomas and Teresa. • Not long after Alby’s sacrifice, Thomas and Teresa were in what Thomas called the “Griever Hole”. • Thomas and his friend cleared the grievers inside for Teresa to punch in the code.

  39. CL Climax • Teresa put in the code, but she couldn’t put in the last word. More grievers kept coming in through the hole, and they couldn’t figure it out. • Thomas’ friend noticed a button on the wall, it said “END”. Without question Thomas pushed it, and it stopped all the grievers, and froze them like ice cubes. Everyone that was still up came down, and a wall moves, revealing a hole that looked like it was meant for their escape.

  40. CL Climax • Everyone went down one by one, Thomas volunteered to go last, and they all got down. • They found themselves in a room that sealed them with glass windows and a door or two, with what seemed like scientists dressed in lab coats. • They were just being stared at, by the scientists that seemed like they were in awe, talking amongst themselves. Mihno got angry, that they were just doing noting, so he began shouting at the scientists.

  41. CL Climax • Not too long after Mihno’s rage train, one of the scientists came in, with a familiar face, one that not everyone was too happy to see, Gally, Gally greeted them with the woman in the lab coat. • He stated that he was sorry and flung a knife at Thomas, slow enough for Thomas’ friend, Chuck. Thomas was sad, then ridden with rage, he went to Gally and literally beat him to death, till his face was riddled with bruises, and blood came from every part of his body. Newt pulled him away, then Mrs. Lab Coat began to speak.

  42. F Falling Action • She began to tell them that this was all a big experiment, but just as that happened, what looked like Seal Team Six, stormed the place and shot every last one of the lab coats dead. • They told the kids that they had good reason to do that, and told them to come with them on their bus that they had standing by. They agreed to do so, considering the choices that awaited them. They asked to be briefed by the man that appeared to be their leader.

  43. F Falling Action • He said that lab coats were some pretty bad people, the ones that they show. They work with WICKED, “World In Catastrophe Killzone Experimentation Department”. • He said that they were testing with orphaned kids to find a cure for the solar flare disease. • He said that the solar flares were reactions by the sun that infected a good portion of the world’s population, and that a part of that portion was every single one of the Gladers’ parents. • He also told them of them calling themselves Scorchers.

  44. CO Conflict • There are several types of conflict in the story. Such as…, • Person Vs. Person • Person Vs. Nature • Society Vs. Society

  45. CO Conflicts (PvP) • One of the biggest person vs. person conflicts had to be between Thomas and Gally. • For some reason Gally wanted to be mean to Thomas and screw him over, his first day in the Glade. • He also said some stuff during the course of the story that, I myself, was enraged by the pure cruelty and heartlessness by Gally, an all-time jerk.

  46. CO Conflicts (PvN) • There’s obviously a big person versus nature conflict within the Maze. • It’s Thomas, Mihno, the other runners, practically everyone within the Glade has a dispute with the Maze. • Everyone feels strongly about getting home to whatever they had, and wants to get out, but the impossible and unsolvable Maze is holding them from that very goal.

  47. CO Conflicts (SvS) • The extreme conflict in the book, the society vs. society, is between the Gladers and the Creators. • After all was said and done, the Gladers knew who they were, they were with WICKED, and were disgustingly testing the children to try to find some kind of cure. • This conflict was clearly solved when the Scorchers killed them all.

  48. R Resolution • The Gladers reach the settlement named the Scorch, and they’re given food and a place to sleep. • It seemed like for the moment, the Gladers were safe, safe from WICKED, safe from grievers, safe from the Maze. • That was all that anybody could’ve asked for, for the time being… - BOOK ONE RESOLVED

  49. T Theme • The theme in this book is as clear, understandable, and recognizable as anything in the world could be. • It’s easily themed at a “Never give up”, “Don’t stop”, “Never lose hope”, “Go hard, or go home”, or “Don’t stop believing”. • The “Never lose hope, and never give up” are more so the theme than any of the other ones. The Gladers did exactly what they state, and the book couldn’t describe it better in any other way.
